Did anybody know about the development of this fission reactor type?

yes, we learned about them (basics) in Nuclear Power School

the Soviets used them in some submarines

there was a prototype of one in Idaho where i did my training, but i think it was already mothballed (EBR II mentioned in the article, i was there in 1987 at another facility)

they are fairly dangerous compared to PWR (pressurized water reactors)

This seems to be a little more advanced form of the liquid metal fast breeder reactor, so its not the exact same as what was used in soviet subs and the like, just a more advanced version of it.

Hey FoBoT, nice to see another nuke on the forum. I missed going to Idaho, and went to NY instead. Class 8107, graduated from the S3G prototype in August of 82. :)

i was at S5G as a student in Idaho in 1987, then i did shore duty at S8G in Ballston Spa from 92-96 we completed the refueling overhaul to put in the S6W seawolf core and then got back into student training when i got out in Jan 96

there are a couple other navy nukes on OT, one is working in civilian nuclear power IIRC

Yeah, I decided to give up the nuke life when I got out. Sick & tired of the politics, ya know??

I work now as civil service at an air force base, and one of my co-workers was an ELT when he was in, back in the 70's. Small world, for sure! :)
