Did antiobiotics cure me?

I had a nasty chest/sinus cold that would not go away. I went to the doctor Tuesday, and after checking me out, he thought I had some sort of infection. I took my first pill that night, and I felt almost completely better by last night (24 hours later). Do antibiotics really work that quickly?

I almost never go to the doctor for something like a cold, but this time I'm glad I finally did.

Very doubtful the antibiotics did anything after 1 pill. You might notice a decrease in some symptoms, but if you were to stop taking them, the illness would probably come back right away.

You were probably getting over it after 3 weeks naturally, or else it was a plecebo effect.

Well, in any case, finish the complete course of antibiotics even if you think you're completely healed.

Be sure to finish ALL of your anti biotics.

I thought that was a myth?

No, the chances you killed all the bacteria with one pill is pretty slim. If you stop taking them, they may continue to replicate (albeit. stronger strain).

But hey, I'm an engineer. That's what my friends in pharm D tell me. But it's always been this pet peeve of my mine that my parents and some friends think that anti biotics work for the flu and that you can save anti biotic medicine to use for something else down the road.....(such as for the flu )

Depends what kind of antibiotics. I'm prone to infections. I know the usual stuff amocillin (usually given 30 pills) takes a few days. And I know Cipro (given 3 pills) "cured" me in hours.

Well shoot. I was searching for that article and couldn't find it. The first 100 results all said that you definitely should finish all of them.

Once again, I am wrong.

I am unsure of how to react to this. Do I take it as a compliment or have self pity that the only thing I am successful at is being wrong?

You're wrong. Being mistaken about something is not okay -- it's a sign of weakness.

Having thought this over I now admit that I was wrong.
