Did an Apple Store trip today

Checked out the new goods. For starters, the Air - yowza!

Macbook Air: Awesome - the future of computing. For a long time, I have wanted an ultraportable Macbook. Then I got the 11.6" in my hands - it's fabulous, but not for me. I played with the 11.6", then I played with the 13", and the 13" definitely felt like the right fit. It didn't really feel any heavier or bigger - just a much more usable screen.

The end is about the thickness of a pencil eraser. The USB ports were very nearly flush with the edge - amazing! Easy to carry, easy to open the screen, really great LCD screen, boots up quick. I didn't see the point of their "instant on" bit - that's not boot, that's restore from hibernation mode. But the old Mac laptops woke from sleep instantly anyway. I dunno. But it did boot up fast.

My buddy and I screwed around with iMovie for a bit. 2 gigs is NOT enough for iMovie - the movie kept stuttering on playback (we were messing with the movie trailer feature), even in small preview mode, not fullscreen. We had about 29 megs of RAM free on the 2 gig model. I would have thought the SSD would help speed up virtual memory, but HD video kept choking. My Sandforce (250 MB/s+) seems to do a much better job at that; there is a Sandforce upgrade available:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/27/macbook-air-upgrade-kit-bumps-capacity-to-256gb-turns-old-modul/

If I had money to burn, I'd do a 13" Air with that 256GB SF-1200 upgrade and 4GB RAM. That'd be a sweet little ride right there. It was amazingly capable - felt like a real computer, not an Air McSlowsky. Surprisingly, it felt thicker than the previous Air, since the back end was tapered from a "V". It felt about 1/3 as thick as an iPad. They should throw a Core 2 Duo in an iPad now

If I truly needed an ultraportable, I would go with the 11.6". If I were just buying an anything-laptop, then the 13" is really the ticket for me. Maybe for Christmas 😉 Oh, and the regular Macbooks & Macbook Pros felt like bricks after playing with the Air. So much for awesome Apple design on the "real" laptops, haha.

Magic Trackpad: I went into the store to browse, but secretly hoping that I would buy a Magic Trackpad. It was pretty cool, but I just couldn't see myself using it. I'm so much faster with a mouse. It's a really nice size, the gestures work great, iPhoto had a bit of trouble with rotates, and I couldn't figure out how to pan once zoomed in on a photo (at least, without clicking & holding on the mini-preview window, but maybe that's just how iPhoto is). There's some aftermarket software available to customize gestures, which is what I was planning on doing, but opted not to. Maybe someday. Maybe. If I can think of some better uses for it than just playing around.

iPod Touch: WOW is it thin! Feels amazing in your hand. I don't know what people are talking about as far as bad camera quality goes, the front-facing camera looked *great* on the screen. If I didn't have an iPhone 3GS, I'd totally get one of these. Very impressed!

iPod Nano: In a word - cool!! I thought this would be the lamest product ever, but it was actually REALLY neat! It's like a touchscreen clip-on Shuffle. The homescreen with the icons works really well, surprisingly. Some of the menus in the apps were a tad slow and had a tiny bit of interface weirdness, but for what it was, I was very very impressed.

iPod Shuffle: Love my old clip-on one. The new one is even smaller - very nice. Best iPod for the gym imo.

iMacs: 27" is a nice size. I've been installing a lot of Hanns-G/I-Inc 28" LCD's at work ($249 on Tiger Direct) and I like them better because of the matte screen. I like the iMacs a lot, just not the glossy screen too much.

Mac Mini: Holy crap, they're huge! And heavy! I miss the older, smaller design. It's like the old AppleTV. Neat, but didn't really care for this iteration.

AppleTV: Wowowow! So small! Literally the palm of your hand! Didn't particularly care for the remote, or the fact that you can't hook it up to an SDTV. I'll probably get my dad one for Christmas, since he likes iTunes a lot for TV shows, but I want a Boxee. The new AppleTV is a very sexy device though...I almost left with one after not getting hooked on the Magic Trackpad. But I didn't want to convert my library to MP4, haha.

17" Macbook Pro: Real nice...played with one with a matte screen. I liked it a lot. For pro work, that'd be a very nice machine.

My local store was really interesting. It's mostly laptops and iPod Touches now. There used to be aisles of software and accessories, especially accessories for the iPods. Now there is just a tiny corner wall in the back. Go Mac App Store go! I almost left with a 13" Macbook Air, but just couldn't justify the price for how much I'd actually use it. My wife would love it though, especially for traveling. Maybe Santa will smile upon my Hackintosh-loaded household this year, haha.

It just feels like what a laptop is supposed to be. The previous Air was very cool, but felt too thin. The aluminum unibody on the new one feels very rigid. It's a pick-up-&-go type of laptop. Just grab it and take it with out.

I would take one over an iPad, for sure.

i dont understand the air, why not just get the macbook pro 13inch for less. Its only an inch think. 2.9 vs 4.5 pounds. 1.6 pounds difference.

I have a dell laptop it weighs prob 6 pounds but its plenty light for me, and I walk about a mile to class.

I did a price comparison between the 13" Air and the 13" Pro as it stands right now.

If you get the 1.86GHz Air with 4GB RAM, it is about $1400. What you get for that is a 128GB SSD that is not the fastest in the world, but that will run circles around any and all platter drives. You also get the 1440*900 display, and the insane boot times.

For the Pro, you get 2.4GHz and 4GB RAM. Its advantages are bigger hard drive, lower price, more battery life , FW800 and a backlit keyboard.

However, if you want to drop a good 128GB SSD into the Pro, the price advantage is greatly reduced, it just about disappears in fact.

So what you are left with is the higher res screen on the air, and it weighs half as much. Sure the Pro has an optical drive that you may or may not use, about 50% more battery life and the FW800 port, but a lower res screen.

I never felt burdened by my old MacBook which was thicker and heavier than the existing Pro, but I mean come on, if for roughly the same price (after SSD) why not get the one that weighs half as much and has higher res?

...and a optical drive and the ability to go up 8GB of RAM. Also, the Air doesn't have an SD card slot or Gigabit ethernet connector.

A 13" MacBook Pro can easily be your only computer. IMHO, the Air would not be nearly as good in that role. For the road warrior with a lot of money that wants a laptop but uses an iMac or Mac Pro for day-to-day work, the Air would be great.

FYI, the 13" Air does have an SD slot:

http://www.apple.com/macbookair/specs-13inch.html

The 2GB RAM is a big limitation for me. An 8GB ceiling would be better, but at least they offer a 4GB option ($100 more). I would say the Air is great as either a second computer for a power user who wants something very portable, or as a primary computer for a regular, non-nerdy person. For me, the 13" would be the family laptop, something my wife and I share and use on trips and whatnot. It's good enough to run her photography stuff on with the higher resolution. While I think the iPad is aimed as being the "couch" computer, I'd rather have an Air floating around my home because it's more functional.

Actually - in person - it's quite a big difference. It's like the computer you don't have to think about. It doesn't weigh anything, it doesn't have any size, and it has pretty good battery life. To me, it felt like the iPad of laptops - the thing you always have with you. My primary laptop weighs 12 pounds (15 with the A/C adapter), so the thin size makes the Air a truly go-anywhere device

Apple makes pretty great laptops. There's nothing wrong with the Pro line. But they're not as portable as the Air. Once you get one in your hands, you'll see what I'm talking about - the Air is like a non-consequential computer. Sits on your lap easy, grab it with one hand easily, hand it to someone easily, takes up no space in your bag, reasonably powerful for 99% of the tasks most people do.

I think it's pretty neat. At some point I'll probably pick one up. Probably when that Sandforce-1200 mod is available for it :sneaky:

Uh, what? The Mac Mini is smaller than the previous generation, and heavier because it now has the power supply built-in rather than having an external brick. Personally I like it.

I also really liked the new Air when I checked one out but moving from a 15" with backlit keyboard to the air with no backlight might be a deal breaker for me.

Come on Apple!!!

Curious - what's so great about the backlight? Do a lot of people not know how to touchtype? I was cursed (blessed?) with a drill sergeant of a typing teacher back in middle school, so the backlight thing has fortunately never bothered me either way; I don't know if there's another use for it though.

For the function keys maybe in lowlight environments.

Because its cheaper has better battery life. Haven't the apple defenders always talked about battery life?

Also with the pro you have the option to replace the HD, to something bigger. With the air your stuck. When weight is that low its a non advantage to me.

Even my 6 pound laptop has never been an issue for me, I could go anywhere with it. Go anywhere to me, is something that can go in my pocket though, with the air you still have to carry the same laptop case/bag/etc. I would buy the pro, i can't imagine the air having much success.

gf just got me a magic trackpad for my birthday

pretty awesome so far; I have it hooked up to my mac mini which serves as my HTPC.

I'd prefer a mouse though if I was using a desktop.

Yes, the battery life is lower, which I mention. I also mention...

...that if you want a more fair SSD v SSD comparison, then you can replace the drive in the MBP, and the price advantage more or less goes away.

Oh, and http://www.photofast.tw/products/GM2_SFV1_Air.html

There is no price yet, but it seems that if they were able to put out a replacement product so quickly, then they won't be the only ones.

Then fine, DON'T get the Air. You asked why not get the Pro for less, I offered reasons why. Just because you don't mind carrying a 6lb laptop, and I don't mind carrying a 6lb laptop, it doesn't mean that dropping more than half that weight wouldn't be a good thing. And if that weight drop also includes a higher res screen and a fairly good SSD... then it isn't like the Air is a complete bust. Unlike the last one, which was kind of worthless.

Really like my appletv. First media to tv playing device that doesnt stutter, freeze or hang. THe remote is tiny but u get use to it. On my way to get a second atv for the den tv.

My wife is often ready to throw hers out the window. The battery life is atrocious.

My first gen iPod touch I never even had to think about charging. It would last for days of normal use. (IE: web surf, play games, listen to music without the screen on for hours on end, etc.)

Then we got the 3rd gen iPod Touch- battery life was much, much less than my first gen, but at least one could get an average day's use out of it before needing a recharge.

Now my wife has the 4th gen- it's just horrible as far as battery life. Yes, I've done everything recommended to increase the battery life like turn off all unnecessary wifi use. It's rare that it can make it through a single day of normal use. Even with the screen off, and wifi functions ceased it's often in the red in record time.

I wish Apple would stop trying to make gadgets for freakin' Leprechauns (I mean seriously, are people shrinking or something?) and just get back to making things like the iTouch that function as expected even if the battery has to be *GASP* a few millimeters thicker.

Hmm, hadn't thought about battery life vs. thinness. My previous iPhones have always run out of battery about 3/4 through the day of my normal usage, so I have a charger by my bed, computer, work desk, and car. But given how THIN the new iTouch is...yeah, with a color touchscreen that large, ouch.

I have a $19 Verizon cell phone that I use as my primary phone. It's about as thin as a Razr - my thumb covers the entire keypad. I like the thinness for my pocket, but saying Leprechauns are the target may be being generous lol. Steve Jobs said they'd never make a big iPhone, which annoys me because most of my friends have those new 4"+ Android phones and they're so nice because they feel like they were designed for adults instead of teenagers. I don't mind my 3.5" iPhone 3GS's screen at all, but the 4.3" screen on the Droid X is just so nice for actually DOING stuff on. I'd love an iPhone XL (on Verizon, of course 😉).

you need one of those morphie battery cases.
if you use it so much that you beat the battery to death that quick, no smart phone is going to suffice.. you need extended battery cases.

disable multitasking - get your shsh blobs and jailbreak it. battery life will go way up.

the new macbook air - wow - the 11" with 16:9 looks wrong - 13" is the only way to go. i dunno working on 16:9 is nasty i need the 16:10. Thank god i took a look at one - and the lack of backlit keyboard - that is ghetto. they've moved the MBA from elite status to lowest end model status 🙁

used prices are good for the ole 13" with backlit keyboard 😉
macbook air rev.a - $500 drive - $600 pata ssd model
macbook air rev.b - $700 drive - $800 128gb ssd model (high $$ usually includes 1.5 years of warranty or more)
macbook air rev.c - $800 drive - $1000 128gb ssd model (high $$ usually includes 2 years of warranty or more)
