You cannot use thermal paste with a thermal compound?!

They are both designed to do the same thing?! Why cant they be used together?

Better yet, why do you have to spend a lifetime cleaning the heatsink & processor core once youve used a pad, if you want to use paste?! 😕

Im just totally 😕

I looked for an answer on google and couldnt find one 🙁

Someone enlighten me please!

Thermal paste and thermal grease are both types of thermal compounds. You want to mix a paste with a grease? er why?

To clean the core/heatsink, just take 2 mins to clean it with some alcahol to get the junk off, the old stuff won't work as well as newly applied compound. And if you've used a pad, you should make sure you remove it entirely, because if you don't, left over pieces could cause gaps that also affect heat transfer.

can't use em together because they you have two layers and too much goop between your processor and the heat sink.

as for cleaning it, alcohol doesn't get it off that well. i started rubbing it with my finger to get the rest off.

But apparently thats worse due to the oil in your skin?! 😕

People use products like Artic Silver because it has superior heat transfer abilities. If you were to use the original pad with it the transfer rate would be limited by the pad, as the heat will only reach the heatsink at the rate of the slowest material in its path. I use a free Formica sample from the local home center to scrape off most of the pad, remove the rest with Goo Gone (works great), then wipe with alcohol.
