I have some kind of stomach virus or infection... not sure which. I can't hold anything in, liquids or hard food. I was just at the doctor's this morning, and i was gettign IV due to serious dehydration. I got 3.5 liters before I left... which is about a Gallon.

I got antibiotics, but they dont seem to be helping. I just went out and got some gatorade, and I can't rehydrate myself with that either.

Is there anything else I can do...any home remedies? Thanks.

Why didn't you ask your doctor while you were there?

well imodium AD will stop teh diareah, but in a case where there is a virus, its best to let it out of the system.

Drink water with a pinch of salt and a teaspoon or two of sugar. It will help you rehydrate.

Soda water or soda (pop) as in Coke/Sprite?

If you are trying to rehydrate with gatorade, it should be diluted with water... There is too much sugar for the amount of liquid you are ingesting.... For whatever size gatorade you are drinking, add about 2/3rds of the container full of water to it...

Coca Cola will help settle an upset stomach, but I don't how much of an effect it'd have with a stomach virus.

Probably just dehydrate you worse, given its effect in healthy people. Like it was already said, your best bet is to drink plain water with a little salt and a sugar. Gatorade . . . .meh, water is free.

If you are going to drink soda, I would stay away from colas... 7-UP or Ginger Ale would be my recommendation...

water!!

Plain water doesn't have the sodium or potassium required to keep the heart beating. Dehydration isn't just loss of water. Clear sodas aren't the best (gatorade/pedialite are really best), but they do work well.

Call back the doctor's office and make them earn the money they charged you. Did they just give you an Rx, bag of fluid and send you on your way w/o any additional instructions?

it is even better for dehydration than gatorade

Yeah, plus, they even make Pedialite pops - if you desire a popsicle to rehydrate your system.

The DiscoveryThe Discovery

"The discovery that sodium transport and glucose transport are coupled in the small intestine so that glucose accelerates absorption of solute and water (is) potentially the most important medical advance this century."

Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) is a simple, cost-effective treatment given at home using either a simple home solution of sugar, salt and water or a packet of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS), costing about 10 cents each can prevent about 90% of child deaths from diarrhoeal dehydration.

It's the most effective, least expensive way to manage diarrhoeal dehydration

It is estimated that the use of ORT now saves the lives of more than one million children yearly.

Acute diarrhea normally only lasts a few days. ORT does not stop the diarrhoea, but it replaces the lost fluids and essential salts thus preventing or treating dehydration and reducing the danger.

The glucose contained in ORS solution enables the intestine to absorb the fluid and the salts more efficiently.

ORT alone is an effective treatment for 90-95% of patients suffering from acute watery diarrhoea, regardless of cause, This makes intravenous drip therapy unnecessary in all but the most severe cases.

"There is growing recognition that finding effective ways to deliver existing, proven, low-cost health and family planning technologies to the rural and urban poor could save as many lives as a new vaccine or drug.

It is important to rehydrate with solutions that contain electrolytes (sodium and potassium) so that electrolyte losses are replaced adequately to avoid the dangers of hyponatremia and hypokalemia. Sugar is important to improve absorption of electrolytes and water, but if too much is present in ORS solutions, diarrhea can be worsened. Oral rehydration does not stop diarrhea, but keeps the body hydrated and healthy until the diarrhea passes.

There are several commercially available products but an inexpensive home-made solution consists of 8 level teaspoons of sugar, 1 level teaspoon of table salt, mixed in 1 liter of water. A half cup of orange juice or half of a mashed banana can be added to each liter to both add potassium and improve taste. If commercial solutions are used, true rehydration solutions should be used and sports drinks should be avoided (especially in younger children) as these solutions contain too much sugar and not enough electrolytes.

If you are becoming dehydrated due to anal overflow, perhaps sticking a hose up your ass and turning the water on would rehydrate you.
