diamondmax plus 9 & serillel = no worky

i just got an extra hd last week during the compusa deal (maxtor diamondmax plus 9, 160GB). all my IDE connections were taken, so my plan was to copy everything from the smallest drive in my system (a WD 40GB) to the new drive, then put the new one in its place (which is on the SATA connection using the Serillel adapter that came with my motherboard (NF7-S)).

only problem is, once i hook up the new drive with the Serillel connector, the SATA controller doesnt detect it. i have a second 160gig'er (same model, from a previous sale) and that one isnt detected either. finally, i took an 80GB maxtor from my brother's computer and tried that one, which DOES get detected.

anyone know why it wont work with my 160's? yes, i had the jumpers set to master (and tried cs and slave too) and yes i'm positive i had power connected to both the drive and the serillel adapter.

okay, you have NF7-S.

I had the same exact problem with my current set using Abit IC7-G. Finally got them detected by doing BIOS tweaks from reading a LOT of threads on Abit site.

If you can just swap the drives around until you get one that works with the Serillel adapter. A last resort is a PCI ATA card.

I don't have specifics but I remember the 2 main pages I had to work on were:

1. Advanced BIOS features: bootable add-in devices,
2. Integrated peripherals: onchip ide device (quite a few changes here), onchip pci device

Try removing the jumpers from the drive altogether. Tech support from Promise asked me to try that, but I had returned the adapter by then.

tried that... no jumpers is maxtor's slave setting...

apparently this adapter doesnt work well with udma mode 6 (ata133) drives, esp when they're maxtor. i've seen talk about a utility to change it to mode 5, but i cant seem to find it. anyone know where to find this phantom utility?
