Diamond X1950XTX at the Egg now at 419.xx....

I don't know about over there, but over here it's been impossible to justify purchasing a 7900GTX for a long time due to X1900XT prices being at rock bottom. I got my X1900XT 512MB for £199 after tax (17.5%) and the 7800GTX weighs in at over £300 if you want the retail version.

but if noise is an issue, that x1900 is going to cost an extra $30 for the accelero cooler, and then it blows down on the motherboard.. that's not good tho

$30 can't be right. I'm no expert on the dollar/pound conversion rate, but my Zalman VF900-CU costed me £30.

That's still a fortune less than the 7800GTX is here, and the VF900 is more expensive than the X2.

well, according to the egg current price, 22.99+5.64 = 28.63, down a buck from the other day.

That's about £15 before tax. Sounds about right actually, so yeah it's still an enormous fortune less than a 7800GTX even with silent aftermarket cooling slapped on it.

It blows down towards the bottom of the case, not on the motherboard.

Still hardly ideal, but better than stock cooling all the same. And loads quieter! Just make sure you have good case ventillation.

assuming the case is vertical, pictures of the unit show vents on the bottom of the unit, not the side though?

Trust me, it blows directly down onto the motherboard. This is assuming the card is installed perpendicular to the motherboard without some weird riser card and such.

...depends on what you want... I wanted a top end SLI rig, so I opted for the GTX. GX2 and Quad-SLI doesn't seem to be delivering in the performance dept. I considered the 7950GT, but I'm still a bit skeptical of the GT cards, plus I like the cooler on the GTX. For a single card setup, I think I'd opt for the Radeon though. The X19x0 cards are really great performers, and a decent price to boot.

Ulfhednar: why are you even comparing prices for a 7800GTX...? That card is overpriced at every retailer that still carries it. Also, bear in mind that the pricing structure in the US and the UK appear to be quite different.

i'm VERY pleased with my eVGA 7950gt...and i'm VERY pleased with the games it came with 🙂 (hitman blood money with the card, and i will be receiving half life 2:episode 1 and dark messiah of might and magic)

Wait, when did Diamond get back in to the high-end market? When Best Data bought up the name in 2002, and for the longest time since then, they've avoided everything except the low-end.

I think they started with the X1800 series. Their cards still seem to be strictly reference models with generic white boxes though.

Although the X1950XTX is a better buy than a 7900GTX, I think it's still too expensive compared to the amazing X1900XTX prices. Last I checked, the Sapphire ones were going for $300 AR ($330 up front) on Newegg.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the 7950GT... I just said that I was a bit skeptical of the GT 7-series cards, glad you're happy with your's though. Good price for a smokin' card..

Either way, my main point was with regards to the GTX vs an X1950XTX... The OP has made the point that they find it difficult to justify the GTX, when I personally feel that dual GTXes is the best overall dual card setup available right now. A Crossfire rig based on the 975X chipset is sweet also, but you have the cards relying on a direct competitor's chipset (similar to the situation with the ULI southbridge) in order to run Crossfire. I prefer the full NVIDIA gpu/chipset combination, which I feel not only provides a great setup now, but also doesn't leave me concerned with future support.

Seeing as there's no Nvidia equivalent for Conroe at the moment, 975X Crossfire is a pretty good bonus.

If you want a more apples-to-apples comparison, you can still run Crossfire using the excellent ATI 3200 chipset on AMD (both socket 939 and AM2) just like Nvidia's Nforce 4/Nforce 5 for SLI.

------------

"Similar to the situation with the ULI southbridge" is a bit of a red herring if you ask me -- I'm running an ASUS A8R32-MVP (upgrade from a DFI Lanparty Ultra-D), and quite frankly the combination of ULI's southbridge and ATI's RD580 chip smokes Nvidia's chips -- the ATI board runs much cooler, consumes less power, and RAID performance is way better on the ULI chip. No sabatage going on here by a "direct competitor" (what exactly does ULI compete directly against ATI for?).
