I'm looking to buy an engagement ring in the next month or so. I've read up on everything, but can you really tell a difference between an I color and a D color. My budget is $10,000, and big is obviously better to show off to everyone. any help?

Why is everyone calling me an idiot for spending 10K on a nice ring for my future wife? The M.D. will pay pretty well folks.

if you've really read up on everything you already know you're an idiot if you blow $10k on a ring.

10,000$ is crazy for a wedding ring. Go a jeweler and tell them you're looking for a ring in the 10,000$ price range and they'll serve you a cocktail while they tell you about the "huge difference" between an I color and D color diamond.

I recommend you go to a jewelry store in the mall, tell them you have $10k to spend, and ask for their recommendation.

Seems fitting for someone who wants to spend $10k in the first place.

For all of you who are saying to not buy a diamond, what would you suggest he purchase instead?

My girlfriend and I are looking at getting engaged and she doesn't care for a diamond. If I do get one, she said, I should get her a small one as she doesn't see the need for them.

Or buy something nice that doesn't promote human rights violations.

she didn't get it.

I can tell you right now that Mall jewelry stores are not the best places to buy diamonds. More often than not, salespeople aren't as knowledgeable as you think. Do your own research before hitting any stores (at least). Know exactly what cut you want, optimum diamond specs (angles and such) then start comparing from different vendors.

Downpayment on a house or condo. If you already have one, get another one and rent it out.

Rubies are usually pretty nice.

Go to a goldsmith and have something custom made for both of you. They can make some awesome custom bands.

when purchasing diamond engagement rings, you have to know the 4 C's

Cut
Clarity
Color
Carat Weight

diamonds that are D E or F are usually bought as investments, they are bought as just the stone without any setting or anything and left in a safe vault. G H and I are for more suitable for normal day wear.

cuts are also important because if a diamond is not cut correctly, you wont get a good sparkle
anything over 2 carats becomes exponentially expensive, brand names like tiffanys also cost more. my advice, go to tiffanys with your fiance and choose a ring.

I just recently purchased a diamond ring as well, I would suggest pricescope and diamondtalk for more information. Regarding the specs, I would go with, VS2-IS1, H, VG/VG on symmetry and as close to ideal as possible. Try to find a stone with the inclusions towards the end and not on the table. Hope that helps.
