And holy crap, I just realized you people were talking about JUST the diamond (without setting)....even those "dirt cheap prices" are INSANE in my book!
A good gold ring will add just ~$100 to the price including mounting.

Well I guess that's okay...I went the platinum route so I'm coming from another angle. saved my arse off for that thing

How much did you pay if you think these prices are high?

Nice but the clarity and color are not good matches.

meh.... I seriously doubt he or his fiancee would be able to detect the difference between and H and an F.... however... The diamond I bought was a F VS2.

More realistically if around 1800 is his budget....

this would be more impressive for his woman.

That's not what I mean. Ideally, after picking a well cut diamond, you should make sure the color and clarity are both in the same ballpark. Otherwise, you are paying more money unnecessarily. VVS2 is overkill for an H color diamond. You would be much better finding an equally well-cut diamond that is F or G in color and VS2-SI1 in clarity. It would cost nearly the same and make more sense.

It is the reason a D colored SI2 or a IF G color diamond would be a hard sell.

*shrug* my point was simply that he was paying too much. Those couple I posted were just what I grabbed real quick from DCD and WF.... And they were much better and cheaper.

Not to mention everyone's eyes work differently... my gf for example could see color very well... she could identify as high as G... but as far as inclusions she really couldnt see even an SI2... So reverse your thinking... if the girl can see inclusions but not color... you can save money by focusing on what she can and cannot see.

I hear your point. You are right in that it is an individual preference. I was just commenting from a "blank slate" sort of standpoint. If someone was much more sensitive to color than clarity, then it might make sense to increase the color grade at the expense of clarity.

THANKS GUYS!! The price includes a 14k white gold ring and settings/sizing, but still from what you guys posted I think it's still way overpriced. Thank salesperson probably was trying to rip me off coz i'm not experienced. Glad I ask ppl's opinions first! I checked bluenile.com and a .52 triple ideal H VS2 with 14k white gold ring cost $1644 total. Is that a good price? also how can I get 10% off at bluenile? and does it charge tax for CA?

In CA, go to Robbins Brothers or in S. Cal Jewery Exchange. Both are heavily discounted. .5 Carat is too small. A woman will prefer a poorer quality diamond that is BIG over a good quality small diamond any day.

True, get the biggest one you can afford, and make that things sparkles like no other; the sparkle is waht catches women's eyes. The more it sparkles, the less you have to worry 'bout the clairty and color imo. The cut should be ideal to make it sparkle the best.

I got mine from mondera.com last year (had a coupon for fifty bucks off, not great but still every bit helps). It was a VS2, H color, round 0.57 carat diamond in the 'hearts and arrow' ideal cut with a platinum band setting and cost me less than $1800. It had some flourescene in it which helped the diamond look 'whiter'.

But she loved it. She told me to get her a smaller rock (she thought the bigger ones looked kinda gaudy and funny on her fingers), but since I got the ideal cut diamond, it sparkles and looks more 'fiery' than her friends' rings. :D

Size doesn't matter that much if her rock will outshine and outsparkle her friends' bigger but lower quality diamonds! ;)

This price is fine... but I still think you can do better... look harder. Learn more. You're not ready to buy a diamond yet. Go to pricescope.com and go through the knowledge portion. There are alot of things to consider.

the ring I bought

take your time with this purchase it's big and it's important.

After going through serveral local jewelers in the Sac area (Max gallery, Kay jeweler, Diamond & Gold vault, Zales, Devons...), I think I'm going with an online dealer. All the local dealers I went through had limited selections and overpriced. and the time spent on going through all the local dealers probably cost me a hundred bucks since i'm paid by the hour. not worth it to keep going to the local dealers.

What do people do with engagement rings after they get married, just sits around? Seems like a huge waste of money. But then again when i propose ill inevitably buy one myself

wear it. if you can, get a matching wedding band so you can wear both without it looking odd.
