As a last minute gift idea I was thinking about getting a pair of inexpensive diamond earrings for my wife.

I was looking around and found these two

I was wondering if these were any good for the price? The amazon on is $89 but from reading the reviews it looks like it was once on sale for $39.99 in which they were a good buy so I'm not so sure at $89 if its a good buy.

I also went to Blue Nile but didn't really see anything that was sub $100.

I am looking to buy these today so any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Those are pretty nice but I think she would prefer one stone as opposed to the 3. She's a big fan of sapphires too!

sadly, due to the economy, my usually thriving industry of really cheap value line Wal-Mart gigalo (sp?) is not doing well......

I think I found a better alternative. I went through my wife's jewelry box and saw a pearl necklace I had bought her when she graduated grad school. She had gotten it caught on something and it snapped. I think I'm going to have it repaired for her and then give it to her again for xmas.

I think I'll just save up some more money for the next big holiday and buy something thats not "cheap".

That's a round K, I2, .20 Ct round diamond.

That's the 4 Cs of basic diamond purchasing:

Cut: can be a round, a princess, heart shape, or pretty much anything. This is the most basic thing that a customer can choose from a diamond. What you choose after this heavily influences the price.
The most common is round, which is what you have chosen.

Color: can range from D to Z. D is colorless, and Z is a very very intense yellow. Between those there are ~22 grades of color. The most sensible would be to buy something in the I range, if it's for an engagement or wedding, otherwise you may choose any color. And I mean any color, because diamonds are usually found as a grade of yellow, but you can also get pink, brown, purple, black or even blue. This will affect the price of a diamond greatly because blue diamonds are very rare, and expensive, whereas black diamonds are usually not very attractive (in terms of shinyness) therefore it will be cheap.
Your's is probably tinted yellow so that it's noticable.

Clarity: Ranges from FL to I3: FL-IF-VVS1-VVS2-VS1-VS2-SI1-SI2-I1-I2-I3. FL means Flawless. IF = Internally flawless. VVS = Very Very Slight [Inclusion] VS = Very Slight [Inclusion] I = Included.
Basically, FL and IFs are going to be very expensive, and the Is are going to be very cheap, but that's because of the amount of inlcusion. An inclusion is something that obstructs that path of light inside a diamond so that it doesn't shine as brightly.
You have chosen an I2. Because your diamond is so small, it would be okay, and maybe even preferable to get such a low clarity diamond, but be warned that it won't be as shiney.

Carat: This is the weight of the diamond, which directly relates to the size of the diamond. A .20 Ct diamond is going to be fairly small, but big enough to be appreciable.

My recommendations would be that you try to get a higher clarity diamond with mostly similar specs, and you would be much more happier with your purchase. This will most likely increase your price, but it will be a much better diamond, since an I2 is a very very low quality diamond.

p.s.: if you have any questions: PM me, and I will try to answer them ASAP.

edit: forgot to mention that this website has a very nice PDF at the bottom of the page, and some very basic information on the webpage itself. That is the website of the Diamond High Council in Antwerp, Belgium, where a lot of the world's diamond trading happens, so you can be guaranteed it's a good source of information.

edit2: I just realized you had two links. I was referring to the first link when talking about the diamond you posted.

While I understand the attitude, I think you should skip those.

With a stone clarity of I2 and a color of K, they will be pretty crappy looking earrings.

Unfortunately, even with the currently reduced price of gold, anything with gold in it's gonna be spendy. You'll be hard pressed to find anything of quality for under $100 in gold and diamonds.

You MIGHT be able to find some nice lab-created colored stones...some of them are VERY nice. (same exact chemical composition as natural stones, but without the natural flaws...or price. No, not nearly as much "OOOH! as real rubies, emeralds, or sapphires, but much more affordable...

OR, you could skip jewelry altogether and find her something else that she'd like more.

Trust me when I tell you that cheap, crappy-looking jewelry is usually worse than no jewelry...

edit...just read your post about re-stringing her pearls...not a bad idea.
