Diamond 5870 PLEASE HELP

I have assembled my second PC on Friday, and seem to only have one problem. Using 3D mark vantage I seem to be getting a horrible score through the Diamond 5870. This graphics card should be blazing fast and I am not sure what the exact problem might be. During graphics test 1 I get average FPS of approx. 13, and even lower in graphics test 2. I was expecting mid 30's.

The PC Setup:

CPU: Intel 920
Motherboard: EVGA SLI LE
HDD: WD Caviar Black 750GB
GPU: Diamond 5870 1GB
RAM: CORSAIR XMS3 (TR3X6G1600C9)
CASE: ANTEC 1200
PSU: CORSAIR 750W

I have not overclocked the CPU and it is currently being cooled by the stock cooler.

All suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated, and other than the the FPS everything seems to be working great and stable.

Thank you all in advance,

What preset are you using in Vantage? "Extreme"? "Performance"?

Overall you should be getting close to 9000 in Vantage in the Extreme preset.

Yeah that's pretty low. Can you install Rivatuner and check to see if your GPU is coming out of 2D mode and into 3D mode when you run Vantage? Which drivers are you using anyway? Download and install the latest one if you haven't already.

I have tried both the ATI drivers and the drivers listed on the Diamond website. Same result. I am downloading rivatuner now

Just download MSI Afterburner: http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm

Run it, then run any game or 3dmark or whatever. After 15 seconds, end the benchmark and look at MSI Afterburner. You can hold your mouse over it, and the clocks should have gone up, and gone back down again.

Also, you say Diamond, isn't that brand long gone? Do you by chance mean Club3D ?

No it is definitely a 5870 Diamond Graphics unit, you can find them on New Eggs, and they have received great reviews. However, I just re-downloaded the drivers from ATI. As soon as this is finished I will download the MSI afterburner. Any ideas what could cause such a slow down?

Hmm, Diamond must have gone US only then, or at least no longer has a presence in Holland/Europe.

Anyways, I haven't seen such slow downs. Maybe thilan is right, and the card doesn't adjust clockspeeds when it enters 3d-mode. Maybe it's running hot? Maybe you put it in the wrong PCI-E slot, or the pci-e slot is running at x4 or even x1-speeds?

GPU-Z may be easier to use.

Download, save, run & keep open
Note core and memory clocks in low power/2D mode
Run a 3D game/app for a bit, exit, note 3D mode clocks

Note how graph shows spikes, and you'll probably catch the clocks still in 3D mode. When you say "core clocks went down," are you seeing 2D idle clocks?

Using the afterburner program it shows an idle of approx. 850MHz on the core clock, and approx. 1200MHz on the Memory clock. I am seeing the core clock drop all the way down to approx 157 in no action states and the memory clock down to 300. I see no spikes on either clock?

While running just the graphics test in Vantage the core clocks remain at 850MHz and 1200 MHz respectively. GPU usage increases significantly, which is to be expected. I just dont understand what could cause the frame rate to be so low.

It could be in the x16 slot but be running slower. Did you check if the slot is running at x16 (you can probably check with GPUz)? And again, you did install the latest drivers?

Yep, just checkied again using the GPUz and it shows "Bus interface: PCI-E 2.0x16 @x16 2.0"? The drivers are definitely updated. I mean this is really bugging the hell out of me.

I have no idea why this would be so difficult.

I need as many ideas as anyone can throw at me on this one!

I'll run Vantage in a bit, very similar rig if I set to stock. You're at stock speeds on everything?

Try going to the EVGA site and find your motherboard drivers? .. I sometimes have trouble if I don't install them.
I also find that windows update sometimes decides that it wants to give me new drivers.

That would be my first suggestion, other than that you said it was your 2. PC, any chance you could take yourr GPU from your first PC and test it in the 2. just to narrow down the potential problem to either the GPU or the rest of the system.

In response to Forumpanda, I will try to update the drivers for the motherboard as well, but as for having another video card; I do not. I sold my last build to a friend.

The bad thing is that I threw out the box for this card, so I do not think fry's will take it back. I know I should be able to RMA the thing back to Diamond. However, I would like that to be a last resort option.

Let me know if anyone has any other suggestions. I really hope to have this working tonight.
