of course people do. cable and DSL aren't available everywhere.
you'll even find many frequent ATOTers use it. My parents for example have no other option

I'm surprised that the internets have even gotten out to them.

I think they're working on extending the tubes. 😉

No I don't use dialup, I'd rather have no cable than no broadband.

We don't have broadband access, either, yet. Supposed to be out our way in a few weeks, but we've been hearing that for a year or so.

But it's just a minor price to pay for having a few acres of land, peace and quiet, no neighbors crammed up against you, fresh air, no traffic congestion, and none of the other headaches of inner suburb/city living. Been there, done that, left it. (NOVA area, Tampa, Atlanta, Boston, among others.)

If broadband is the only major deficiency in country living, I'll gladly put up with it. The advantages greatly outweigh the disadvantages.

Most of the people I know in India use dialup. Even the Internet "cafes" there are mostly a bunch of PC's on a network connected through a single dialup connection. Painfully slow does not begin to explain it.

My cousin uses 56k because my uncle is too cheap to spring for wireless(can't get DSL where he lives). The crappy thing is, he doesn't even get 56k. He gets around 28.8k. I laugh at his miserable download speed of 2-3KB/sec, and then cry about my measly(compared to most people) internet of 750kbps(or 90-100KB/sec). My cousin's brother just got back from college and was used to his college internet. Sucks to be him.

Some people are not quite internet junkies. They cry they cant see the funny youtube videos or other video based humor emails because it takes too long, but they seem totally happy with dialup.

I'm shocked dialup companies still can make a buck.

I work at an ISP and 80% of our customers are using dialup. We pay $.04 a minute for their online time. Most people use 120-360 minutes per month and we make a profit on them, but we have quite a few who use 200-300 HOURS per month. We lose our ass on them. We also sell DSL authentication and it's quite profitable. Plus on the DSL hardware we make about $15 per modem.

I just got an 11% raise this week, so we're doing fine. 😀

If your roof can see the sky, you can get satellite internet. It's 2 way and it is broadband.

512k/128k for $50
768k/256k for $60
1.5mb/512k for like $90

Plus equipment. 48 contiguous only.

my parents still do........ they don't go on the net much.

I'll get them on lite-speed when they move into their new house.

Cheers,
Aquaman

I'm trying to get my parents to get this. All they can get otherwise now is dialup, and only the local phone company provides it out there unless you want to pay long-distance charges. They're paying like 35 a month unlimited right now for dialup with the gay "internet accelerator" thingy. They could have had wireless, but with the hills around there they'd have to put a 40 foot tower in the yard...which wouldn't bother me if I was in their shoes but they'd rather cuss at the slow internet than have a new lawn ornament I guess 🙂 Going to visit them and using it makes me want to pull off my own skin in frustration.
