Hi, my dad was given an laptop (very old, but runs w98se and good enough for www + email). Only thing is, while i can get the dialup connected, it doesnt seem to be transmitting anything - cant open any page with IE/firefox, and the systray icon almost never flashes, i'm seeing about 500bytes transmitted in total.
Instantly thought firewall (it's help guides are a bit useless and its not exactly intuitive) but i exited the program and still cant open any pages. Had a wander through the TCP/IP settings but nothing jumped out as being amiss (not that i've dug through that stuff on any other machine any time recently).
It's also a bit weird that there's only one phonejack type socket - normally there's a 56k one and a second one for eithernet. this has 56k and infrared listed in Network Adapters, plus theres some thing under Network control panel called 'usb to fast eithernet adapter'. A second issue is sometimes it doesnt detect a dialtone either - and if i pick up the other phones theyre totally dead (iirc this happens if you plug a modem phone lead into a eithernet socket). havent figured out what makes it suddenly see the dialtone, liek just now i was dialled in, then shutdown, started it up again and now no dialtone?? It did come with both a modem lead (small plug on one end, bigger plug for uk phone socket on the other) and another lead which has the small plug on both ends.
No ideas here really 😱 🙁
- win98se, not a fresh install (no crap running though)
- had had AOL on it (removed)
- kerio firewall and fr-av antivirus, tried with both exited
- neither firefox nor IE can find any pages
