Dialup Internet problems with Windows XP......

I have a local ISP and it has worked fine with XP for a while, but recently it has been acting up. When my ISP is dialed up and connected, my computer has a long pause before it actually lets you surf the net or connect to AOL Instant MEssenger. When I say "pause," I mean that Internet Explorer says that there is no connection to the Internet and AIM says that the server cannot be found. IT takes a minute or so until I am able to start using the Internet. I am also connecting at a little slower speed than it used to (I connect at 42.2 Kbps instead of about 48.8 Kps). It is my parents computer so I don't know if they changed something or installed something that could have caused this problem, but let me know what you think. The modem is pretty old, but it is a Viking 56k V.90 modem. Could it be going bad?Any ideas? Thanks
