Dial up networking in XP will not save password?

Just built a brand new computer with fresh install of XP. I set up my dial up with my ISP info and save it. When I go to dial up I get some 16 character password in the saved password box. The password is actual 7 characters? I have tried deleting it and making a new one but it keeps bringing up some random number of digits in the password. Sometimes 15, 16 or 17. Of course I can't see what they are as they just show up as dots.
Also can anyone point me towards some info to optimize the settings for the dial up. Modem settings etc. My Windows 98 SE machine logs on at 47k routinely and I am getting in the low 30's with the new rig! It is a Intel hardware modem in the new XP rig.
Thanks!

"Thingy",
Thanks, That did cross my mind but I kept getting a "can't connect" message and assumed that was the culprit. Turns out that the Intel modem was the problem. I stuck in a much maligned WinModem from US Robotics and it worked fine. Still not getting the connections I was getting with my old P450 Windows 98 set up however.

I had the same password problem when I upgraded from Win98 to XP. I tried to set password numerous times but no-go. I resolved issue by logging in as administrator and deleting connection and making a new one.

thingy is right on the encryption issue though.
