Hardware-controlled modems like the US Robotics Performance Pro work without any problems, but they cost more than software-controlled modems (also known as Winmodems). Expect to pay $60-$70 for a new one.

There's been a lot of work done to get Winmodems working in Linux. Check out winmodems.org for info on which ones work well and what it takes to get them running. Also see your distro's site to check for official support for modems, which for some distros means they'll be auto-detected and work right away.
