Not for me, for my parents. They live in the boonies and get 24k max no matter what ISP due to old phone lines. Looking for a good reliable and cheap dial up ISP for them. Ive been on high speed for years and have no idea who to set them up with. Anyone here use dialup that can recommend something?

I'm Mark Goldstein, chairman and CEO of Netzero. All internet providers take you to the same internet, so why pay more to get there!

Depending on their location and surroundings check if there is a Wireless broadband company near them.

People are supprised to find out we can get them 2mb service when they are 20+ miles out of town.

Trust me, all broadband options (other than sat) have been looked at. There is nothing in the area. They currently use a local provider, but they are raising their rates to $20 a month and they want something $15 or less

Juno/NetZero will provide 10/hrs per month free for an account.
A second computer could have a second account.

You can get unlimited dial-up for $10/month.

Thanks for the thread crap. And moronic spelling

Yes I realise that, but if you had bothered to read its the only thing available other than sat and they dont use it enough to warrant a $600 dish and then $50 a month

Yeah always at least one idiot doesn't realize high speed is not everywhere for a reasonable cost.

I support a site with about 12k hits a day. Cable is the most popular with 6000 of those hits. Then DSL at around 3000. Dialup, OC3 and T1 account for around 400 each and ISDN pulls up the rear with 5 hits for yesterday.

Unknown connectivity accounted for 1400 of those.

For those that will say dial up is statisically insignificant then, Dial up is still about as popular as those that hit our website with Macintoshes (3.81%).

It is a top 10 Homebuilder website.

My parents are in the same situation. Just go with the cheapest one like the 9.99 netzero. Any of them are going to be WAY slow. My parents can't connect at more than 24k either because the old phone lines. Luckily they barely use it or they would pull their hair out waiting a full minute for a web page to load.

I just didnt want to put them with something unreliable. Speed isnt a huge issue with them, but the reliability factor is. They dont want to use it often but when they do they want to make sure its there

The overriding issue is that dialup is rarely reliable. I do support for both DSL and dialup. We have 3 times as many dialup customers and take at least 10 times more calls for dialup problems.
I like the one where the customer has changed nothing and yet the password logs now show an empty password, so they cannot connect.

I worked for a local dial up ISP for a year or so and I can vouch that it does actually "fall out" from time to time. Has happened to me on occasion although it is fairly rare.

And when I say reliable, I mean as reliable as dial up can be

blame microsoft for that one. the dial up connect screen is different, it doesnt show you the pass *** anymore, it just has [click here to change pass] or something like that. how would you know it was cleared without it telling you?

Dammit. Your name is Mark Goldston. How many times have I told you to stop what you're doing, put that 24k baud U.S Robotics full duplex modem down and take your pills.

Look up vtisp and see if they have a number local to your parents. $3.95/month for 150 hours. Been using them with few problems for several years. (I'm in the boonies too.)
