Dial up connections keep disappearing even though they're still there

This is really strange but I have yet to find any solution. I have a Compaq X1000 laptop with Windows XP Pro (I clean installed myself) and all of a sudden my dial up connections just disappeared. They are not listed in Network Connections and if I create a new one it will disappear either instantly or by the next restart. I know they're still there because when I open IE (when not connected to a network) they still come up however after it connects it does not put the icon in the system tray. I have made sure the option to have it in the systray is checked.

I'm just plain baffled. I've never seen this happen before and I can't think of anything I did that could have caused it. The connections still work perfectly I just can't see it (which makes it hard to disconnect, not that I do that much ;) ). Any ideas how to make them come back? BTW, my NIC still shows up in both places.

Been playing with your services?

Head to black vipers lair and download the extended services definitions. Then go into services.msc and read the descriptions. Disabling one of the services causes the exact problem you are describing.
