Dial up connection slowing over time

I have a dial up modm with windows xp and no matter what ISP I use it slowly looses bandwidth. I'll start to download a 3 mb file connected at 48.8 and before its done, I'm down under 1.00 kb per second. I've tried uninstalling network settings and even reinstalling xp over itself.

Check out THIS tweak tool from broadbandreports.com. After the test is complete you will be prompted to enter a connection type, choose ISDN.
Granted it is mainly used for cable/DSL users, but I have checked a modem or 3 there. It can give you recommendations to get a better conncetion. Also look for the DrTCP program while there. It can help you tweak the TCP settings easier.
Do a google search for modem tweaks and you will find a few to try.
good luck

I have similar problems (Windows XP & dial up modem).

From reading articles from various web sites, my understanding is that it may be a modem driver problem.
Try downloading latest drivers for your modem (i tried this but unfortunately it didn't help in my case, it may work for you though).

Alternatively, get a "hardware" modem, which doesn't require drivers like "software" modems, and is not really OS dependent.

I am using an external hardware modem at the moment and it seems to work fine.

It could be drivers, or the modem, or it could be the phone lines. I used to have problems with a really crappy connection that would initiate at about 33.6 and go down from there until it disconnected. I now have different line (and modem, but I don't think that was the problem, because I had the new line before I had the new modem, and the problem was gone), and regularly get 52 or 53.3 kbit/sec connects.

Edit: and yes, guys, I know you all like to brag about your broadband, but stop telling everyone who has modem problems to "upgrade." Some of us just can't get broadband; others can't afford it. You're just wasting air (or bandwidth) making useless remarks like that. Oh yes, I'm also bitter about having dialup, and would much rather get broadband. Nevermind. :frown:

I tried a new winmodem but same results. I tried new drivers but nothing. After this and alot more I finally decided to reformat and that fixed the problem. I do hate reformatting because I don't feel like I really fixed anything and I'll never know what actually caused the problem in the first place. Thanks for all the help.
