Diagnosis Help... Missing HD in Windows XP

I'm trying to help my little bro out...

His storage drive began showing up in Windows as unformatted.

His rig-

Athlon64 3000+
Abit KV8 Pro
1 gig of Corsair ValuSelect

He stored like mp3s, games, and mostly subbed anime.

Now would the problem be? I'm guessing something screwed up the master boot record on that harddrive?

He has it as a slave and he can see the drive letter in windows but if he tries to double-click on it it will say it is unformatted.

Any suggestions on what actually is the problem and software that can recover the data?

*knocks on wood* Losing a harddrive is new to me, and besides I want to help my bro out even though its not totally urgent

If he decides to fvck it and reformat, I would think it might be a good idea for him to check the warranty of the harddrive and see if he can get a replacement?

Drive size is either 160 or 200

i've had that happen to flash drives. i ended up formatting them, then running some undelete programs to recover the data. but in ur bro's case, i would think he would only try that as a last resort. could u try pulling the hd out and putting it in another computer to see if the hd shows up normally?
