Diagnosing hardware problems

Hi. I built a rig a week ago and there's some hardware problems.

Sometimes, the thing boots up well, but sometimes it just hangs on the Asus logo (mobo's asus and the logo shows before it boots Windows 7)

There's no BSOD or serious problems, but there are some lags and stutters in Windows 7 even when I'm not running any programs.

Is there a software or some method I can use to see if there's something wrong with my hardware? I had to do some hard reboots a couple of times, but otherwise it should be in good condition, as I've not underclocked/overclocked it and always used an antistatic strap.

Sig was a long time ago.

I'm using i5 2400, Asus P8H61-M LE/CSM, 4 GB Ripjaws, a 30GB refurbished Patriot SSD, caviar blue 250GB, HIS 6670 1GB, and 550W Antec TruPower.

I've tried swapping the SSD with a 2.5" hard drive I had lying around and the Windows 7 stuttering got better. It still stutters from time to time but it's much less. It still hangs at the Asus logo sometimes.

Change the BIOS setting to *not* boot up with the full-screen logo.

Then, you'll be able to read the text on the screen and see what, if anything, is happening at the time of the hangs.

For example, maybe your computer is trying to interact with an IDE drive, and maybe your ribbon cable to your old IDE optical drive has wiggled loose a bit to confuse the computer? Maybe the computer will display something about the IDE driver and then it hangs. Or, maybe something else is hanging it and the computer is displaying text. Oh, a good candidate might be the RAM, maybe it's doing a self-test on the RAM and there is a problem.
