Diagnosed with Diverticulitis today...

Went to the Dr. today after seeing blood in my stool, and they think I have Diverticulitis (swelling of pockets around colon that get infected). Its pretty serious, and completely random. Going in for more tests in the coming weeks to rule out other more serious things. My wifes not taking it good, with her being 6 months pregnant and all, and im worried as all hell. Id have a beer to calm me down but with all the drugs they put me on I can't even do that. Damn..when it rains it pours.

On a related note, I have these white blisters on my dick that are filled with some kind of nasty pus stuff. They pop whenever I masturbate to gay porn. It kinda hurts, but the puss makes a good lube.

AKA: No one wants to hear about your damned bloody stool, jesus man.

My dad has that. Do not eat any nuts, seeds or corn. So far my dad as been ok since avoiding all that stuff. Been a couple years now if I remember right.

Wait til you get the results of the rest of the tests, Bro. It might not be as bad as you think it is.

After getting all the tests, get a second opinion, doctors sometimes make mistakes.

Good luck to you and your family.

I had it back in 2002. It can be painful as hell but you can control it with diet. Stay away from nuts, corn, iceberg lettuce, strawberries, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, etc..... Also start taking some sort of fiber supplement daily. Ya know...like Metamucil. I actually prefer Citracel though. Another thing that helps is taking MSM daily since it helps keep inflamation down. If you follow those guidelines you will be ok....haven't had a flare up since I was diagnosed.

Here's what will probably happen. You will get your final diagnosis, then you will get a week or two of anti biotics, I had 2 weeks of Cipro, that will clear up the infection. You also might be told to follow a strict diet for a month. For a month after my diagnosis all I was allowed to eat was boiled potatoes(plain) oatmeal(plain), boiled pasta(plain), seeing the direction here?, and jello. That gives your colon time to rest and heal up. It sucks but it works. I lost nearly 30 pounds the month I was on that diet.

Do take care of it though.....if you don't you could end up with Crohn's Disease.

Good luck!!!

Yeah, don't dig your grave just yet, it could just be a rabid hemorrhoid or something. Best of luck!

Yeah, thats what the Dr said. He said it acted up cause I ate half a bag of sunflower seeds with the shells, and those along with nuts, and corn can make it bad.

Divertic is not that bad, just uncomfortable. It is manageable with antibiotics.
Millions of people have it. Don't sweat it, it ain't that bad. Just uncomfortable at times.

Worst case scenario, they have to go in and remove the section that is infected....nothing to sneeze at, but not open heart surgery either.

My doctor, and everything I've been able to find to read about it say that the seed thing is a myth.
Lots of folks swear by it, though.

BTW, go see a specialist, if your doc isn't one.....don't need a general practitioner working on the innards.

Notfred, don't be an asshole. What SZ is describing is a pretty serious issue, so just let him vent a bit.

Well im glad so many of you heard of it or had some kind of experience with it. Its really reassuring. I go to a military hospital...so as you might guess, they are pretty straight forward. After the initial tests, they gave me a list of things it could be, and as someone mentioned Crohn's Disease is on that list, along with some forms of colon cancer, etc. But man did they scare the crap out of me. The Dr. even said..."Well, worse case you can die from these various things, or we will just have to remove your colon and you will have to wear a bag."
WTF! Damn military Dr's.

I actually had a ruptured colon in December because I had diverticulitis without realizing it, and one of the herniations burst. Not good, because it could quickly have led to peritonitis and/or gangrene, both of which are pretty deadly. I had emergency surgery (at the very nice Rapid City Regional Hospital - I was going a couple of trials at Ellsworth AFB), and spent 5 days in the hospital.

while most of what you said is true, i have to refute one fact...diverticulitis DOES NOT lead to Crohn's Disease. crohn's is an autoimmune disease (based on the current understanding) and in no way related to the pathophysiology of diverticulitis.

Damn people eat more fiber! I took a nutrition class the last semester of college and we were shown slides of what Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis looks like. Scary disgusting stuff, I've been making sure to eat my fiber since then.

To the OP don't worry too bad as long as it's not ruptured. If the Docs prescribed you antibiotics you should be fine (no rupture), just change the eating habits and think about running more often.

It's not necessarily a question of diet. I actually get a fair amount of fiber, and definitely get regular exercise, including running. It is largely congenital.

I hope all goes well for you, it seems if you do have Diverticulitis that it is not going to be the end of the world for you.

I'm getting my Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis confused.

But diet is very important concerning this disease. Remeber the intestines are muscles also and as with every muscle if they are not worked they weaken. Fiber is the primary method our intestines are excercised.

Here is a useful link with some info

Me too, apparently - what I had was diverticulosis. I am 33, so it is not solely the provenance of old folks. I am in pretty good shape, actually (active-duty military, so they require a reasonable level of fitness), but still had a ruptured colon due to diverticulosis.

Just repeating what my Doc told me....though I think he meant that people with Divirticulitis had more instance of Crohn's, not that Diverticulitis lead to Crohn's.
