Computer has always been reliable up to now....

5 or 10 minutes after switching on from cold it dies.
- no lockups, no crash, no messages, just goes off.

But I can just press the start button and then it's ok for as long as I want to leave it on.

I suspect the power supply so I am going to swap in a spare, but any other suggestions before I do?
- could it be a short?
- could it be a motherboard problem?

Any ideas?

Iwill kk266/XP 1700+/Radeon 8500/windows 2000

Thanks, Stinky.

KK266 FAQs and guide Check the patches for win2k and driver issues and so forth to make certain none of them are the culprit. Since the problem just started it does make it seem like either the PSU or perhaps the board is starting to experience some power regulating issues but ya never know which is why I linked the guide for you to peruse ;) The real head scratcher is why it stabilizes after the one restart and has no more trouble if it is a power supply or distribution issue  Anyways the surest solution is once you restart it leave it on 24/7 crunching SETI for the Team Anandtech :p

It was the power supply.

In the end it got worse so it wouldn't come on after it switched itself off. A tap on the side of the power supply made it come on.

I switched a spare power supply in and have had no problems since.

Thanks for the suggestions.
