diabloii in d3d

i been running it in directdraw ever since i got the taste of d3d 🙂disgust🙂, but felt like giving it another shot after all those driver updates for radeon... fps still dips below 30 when a TP and automap are both open, but generally satisfactory compared to that big pile of mess it used to be. the game stutters a lot in d3d, and i have 256 ram too 🙁 for lvling and stuff it looks a lot nicer, but for dueling or 8ppl chaos runs i wouldnt dare to use it again! any way to tweak the d3d mode? i guess i am gonna have to get me a cheap v3 2k and play diabloii on my secondary computer 🙂

You might get more ram. I had 256 megs and had the same problem. Upped my ram to 512 megs and D2 stutter went away. Think the game was using about 320 megs max.

512mb of freaking ram! hehe i know ram is ridiculously cheap these days and all, but with ddr ram going for so low i feel guilty to spend more than 30 bux on pc100/pc133 ram!

What kind of video card and processor you have? There is no need for 512mb for D2. My friend has 256mb/original Athlon 700/GeForce256 and it runs liquid smooth all the time. There must be something else wrong if it gets choppy on you.

My AMD 1.2GHz. with 256MB RAM and a Kyro II 64MB graphics card runs it beautifully in D3D at 25fps. You should know that Blizzard put a 25fps cap in the game so that you really won't ever get much above that. What speed processor are you running? For a Radeon to stutter in Diablo II is weird . . .

D2 in D3D sucks. Just stick with DirectDraw, it doesn't look much worse and runs much better.

deeko, i been playing the game like few hours a day past half year... i know dd runs much better, but d3d has much better gradiation and richer color (i just noticed that few days ago)

25 would be pretty choppy. do you duel? you cant be laid back when you duel... mine runs about 91-60 fps in dd, nice and smooth. it doesnt stutter at all either.

for those who say the game runs 'smooth' in d3d, i think you really should check it out with the 'fps' command, since the term smooth is a subjective thing. i cant afford to eat few bonespirits or get wwed cuz of a sudden framerate loss.

appletalking, based on what you posted, either your system got some serious issues or kyroII is the card NOT to get for diabloii lol. i guess i will get me a cheapo v3 2k and stick it in my other computer...

Ah, you are referring to the multiplayer version I suspect. The single player version has an FPS cap I believe. No matter how fast your graphics card is, it will only run at 25fps max. I was referring to the fact that my setup never dips below the maximum FPS and therefore is actually a good setup for Diablo II in D3D. 🙂 I don't play very much online.

well nick, ANY card handles single player FLAWLESSLY. notice i said its generally satisfactory EXCEPT when action gets heavy, when it actually matters. i had my share of my fun in single player in first two hours of playing, the rest of the game was ALL about dueling for me.

My ATI RagePro card sucked big time in single player. I'm talking like 8-12fps. 🙁 And that's all the time, too, not just with a lot of monsters on the screen.

Well I'm gonna go level a bit in a few min then time for some dueling. I'll make sure to check fps while dueling.

I do notice it gets choppy when some a-hole bone walls several screens worth and blocks the rogue camp in. Or times when there is a ton of revives/mages it gets a little choppier but usually it plays ok.

I have the exact same problem almost. I sold my old voodoo banshee (PCI) and got me a new Radeon 64MB DDR. The thing that sucks is my frame rates DROPPED like a stone. The Banshee gave me 50+ fps in the worst of scenarios, while im lucky to break 35 in d3d at times. Both on a 1.2ghz rig with 512 MB RAM. I guess D3D for D2 is really weak compared to glide.

jesus christ, the game uses 320 mb max!!! I have 256, i thought that this would be enough for the damn game. NO wonder i get stutters. I always thought that it was geforce card holding me back. We'll i'd like to upgrade to 512 mb ram but i only have two dimms available and i'd have to buy 2 new 256mb sticks.

I've been watching my fps today and it got down to 25. That was in river with about 5 other players and one was a necro with mad amounts of minions. It seemed a little choppy but it's only like that occasionaly so it isn't a problem (at least not in PvM).

BrotherMan: Play D2. Now. 😀 I gotta mule a lot and I got a 104 VF Zweihander and a 136 VF (I think) exec for ya if you want them for that s/s barb. I don't want to mule by myself ever again. Because it can be fine and lag-free but the very first time I drop an item to come back and get it the realm crashes. EVERY TIME!! It's like it wants me to lose those items. Lost my nokozoan, mahim, greyform, few pskulls, rattlecage, and more last night. 🙁 Almost lost my new iceblink that I hadn't used yet either!

EDIT: Ok sounds good. Got a new nokozan but I had to give a decent +sorc/necro skills ammy, nice 107 def +47 def helm, and culwens for it. Oh well I'm packing about 2 million between my 3 chars so after muling I'm gonna gamble like mad. 🙂
