Diablo2 LoD CD-ROM check freeze

Anybody know how can I bypass the periodical CD-ROM game CD check while playing Diablo 2 LoD?

It decides to check and spin the CD in the middle of the game, causing a game freeze for as long as it takes for the CD (about 5 seconds!), getting me killed most times.

It happens a lot in ACT 5 even when entering town.

Is there something I can install to cancel the need for the game CD? As far as I understand the game doesn't need the CD for gameplay.

Thanks.

Make an image to your hard drive using an application such as Alcohol?

Doing that would mean access would be limited by your hard drive speed, which isn't bad at all. I do that for most of my games - as soon as I get them I make an image to my hard drive (if I can, some have copy protection that prevents it) and store away my pristine game discs :)

That way, no physical swapping of CDs AND it's faster.

I haven't played this in a looooooong time, but I think I recall it hitting the CD for some sounds or something and there's some files you can copy off the cd to your game directory to avoid this. Sorry I'm not a ton of help here but do some searches.

Aaah, just searched (from diabloii.net):
I was playing around trying to get that lag that hits you when entering new areas and what not to stop and this seemed to help me a bit changed typical role of my computer from network server to desktop computer (not sure of the impact there though) checked DMA on my CD-Rom drive to give it better performance moved the d2char.mpq and d2music.mpq files from the play disk to my d2 dir (think that helped a lot) increased the amount of virtual memory that windows uses to twice the size of my ram (vm=256min 300max).

These changes seemed to help the lag when loading levels and entering new areas and such, I still got it in some areas but not as bad as it was before. I have yet to try a tcp/ip or Battle.Net game yet to see if there is any performance improvement there. hope this helps some people.

Yep, if you haven't done it already install the game completely so it doesn't swap off the CD.
