Diablo II slowdowns?

I started plaing Diablo 2 today, and have been experiencing slowdowns (it seems particularly bad when there's a lot of stuff on the screen).

Relevant specs:
Athlon XP 2100+
Radeon 9600 Pro
1GB Ram
XP Pro

Any suggestions?

wtf? Are you serious? I pay it fine on a 6600GT. It never lags for me, unless of course I hack my characters on single player and have stuff like super speed and 3 minute meteors/blizzards, super fast cast, and finally tons of % to cast a spell on hit. Then I get SOME lag.

Just go to their official forum tech support. Its a problem with a solution.

As far as I know, all computers pause for a second whenever a big battle starts or a new quest is known.

Run the video test and change it from Direct3D to DirectDraw. Direct3D can result in drops to 12fps or so, but DirectDraw should maintain a constant framerate at all times on that PC.

The game lags no matter how fast your computer is. I can get 300fps in Quake 3, but in D2 I can't get more than 50. It's just how the game was coded.

buy a voodoo3 pci for like $15.. will run diablo 2 faster than any other card

in reference to malak: the game is coded for 3dFX glide as opposed to D3D or OpenGL, so it will run best on voodoo cards - no ifs, ands, or buts. a voodoo pulls 120fps in glide mode :)

people still play d2? I thought that after all the bots and scammers it'd be dead. Well, that's what killed it for me :p

I never played it online. All the cheaters in Diablo 1 ruined b.net for me so when D2 came out I just played it offline.

If you're interested in playing with non-cheaters online, check out the Diablo group at The Amazon Basin. Great bunch of people into coop play. I played D2 for 2 years or so, probably 1.75 years longer than I would have without the Basin games.

PS: I could never get my Voodoo cards (yes, I still have two of them) to work properly under Win2k with Diablo2. I even used some hacked drivers. DirectDraw (rather than 3D) gets rid of most of the video lag. As I recall I ran across a fix at the Basin that allowed 3D with decent framerates.

I was playing a LAN game, with me hosting.

I don't remember slowdowns on my Athlon 700 + GF2 GTS + 256MB...

So you basically played it for a week or so then?
