Diablo II Battle.net and Unique Items

I was under the impression that only one of each unique items exist on any given Diablo II battle.net game.

But yesterday, I was playing with my friend. He was wearing Vidala's Fetlock and we found another Vidala's Fetlock. This perplexed the hell out of us since we thought that there was only one of the unique/set items.

Then I saw this quote on the battle.net site.

<< The increase in Mana is added with other items that increase the maximum amount of Mana (Two Stones of Jordan). For example two Stones of Jordan (25% + 25%) and Frostburns (40%) would be 90% more Mana added to the base Mana. >>

That quote makes it sound like you can have 2 unique Stones of Jordan at a time.

What's up with this? Is there a bug, or can you really have 2 of the same unique item?

uniques are unique because they are named and all have the same stats. Rares are auto-generated. You can have two rare items with the same names that have different stats.

I think the 1 unique per game thing is true. However, I think it works like this: Your friend finds the Vidala's Fetlock in a game he previously played (ie, not the current game). So as long as that game he found the Vidala's Fetlock in is still active, no one will find another one in that game. Now you start a new game, so all the variables get reset. So what if you have that particular unique, it's a new ballgame so to speak. I oculd be way off here, but I think that's how it goes... Oh well. Just my 2c.

Yeah, I get that, but the item we each got was a set item, not a plain magic item. The stats are the same.

My understanding was that a unique would not drop or could not be gambled if it already existed in the game. What you got was a set item, not a unique item.

I do know that you can have or wear any number of the same unique in one game, provided you got them from different games. You could have a whole treasure chest full of SOJs, for example.

you can find many of the same "uniques" and its not a bug

the name unique is misleading because they arent unique, they are just hard to find.

if you find a stone of jordan and then later you find another they will both have the exact same mods,

but if you find a rare item that is called "viper claw" you could easily at some other time find another weapon callled "viper claw" but chances that they are exactly the same will be very very very rare like one in a billion.

Set items are not unique. They can be gambled (at least in classic D2) or dropped at any time regardless of its "twins" existant. Uniques however are another story. When the game determines that a unique is generated, it will look to see if that unique is already in the game. If it is, then you will get a rare. I know several people who have uniques for the sole purpose of increasing the odds for a rare (which in the upper levels is better.)
Note though: in the expansion pack, you will not be able to gamble for uniques or set items.

Is anybody interested in trrying to setup an Anandtech guild?

You can have more than one set item gambled or found in a game but not a unique item.

I know for sure because I have had a set item and then gambled the same item (again).

I've been trying to get Tearhaunch greaves and keep getting the d*mn set item greaves instead again and again. :|

You can have two unique items (as long as they're not duped) of the same type. For example, you could trade for another or use a mule, etc., to get another one.
