I decided to give Diablo 2 another spin tonight (full legal store-bought copy only used by me) and hit a wall. Whenever I install it and try to patch the game, the in game auto-updater tells me that my connection has been lost, and the standalone installer errors out before it even installs anything. If I try running the original I get an error saying "Unable to load function: FT_thunk (Kernel32.dll). If I install the expansion it won't run at all. I've tried compatability mode, uninstalling and reinstalling with reboots in between, using both my CD-RW and DVD drives and nothing has worked. Any possibility it's my game discs? System specs are in my sig.

EDIT: I'm using all the latest drivers, going to try older video drivers right now...

Perhaps try downloading the patch manually from here and install it yourself.
The FT_thunk error is caused by running the game in compatibility mode according to this.
Are the cds scratched?

I tried installing the patch manually and it wouldn't install. They're slightly scratched, so that may be it. I just formatted to fix other weird issues going on so we'll see if this gets fixed in the process.

The format fixed it along with many other nagging problems I was having.
