Diablo 2 char. --> LOD ?

I forget and I can't find my LOD cd, so can I make a regular D2 character, then upgrade it to LOD after I install LOD later on?

Or do I have to install LOD first and create a new LOD character?

I just don't want to waste my time playing a non-LOD character.

I haven't played in like 2 years.

I am on USEAST BNET.

You used to be able to upgrade them... You probably still can.

You haven't played in 2 years? Ohhh man there have been a LOT of big changes.

I do believe you can upgrade your character... but once you do there's no turning back.
