I bought a phone online; being perhaps somewhat less careful than I should have been, it turns out that I bought from a Hong Kong retailer (The web site is very careful to hide this information deep in the small print of the T&C).

The phone was stated as in stock, and "usually delivered within 7 days". I thought that was a bit odd so I phoned them, and was assured by a guy that spoke decent english, that this was just an upper limit, not to worry, that the stock was genuine, blah, blah.

Anyway, it's been nearly 1 month, and the phone apparently shipped 10 days ago; they sent me an e-mail stating that the phone had shipped and to expect delivery in 2 days. However, if I enter the tracking number they've given into the DHL tracking system, it just says "Shipping information received", and that's the only entry on the tracking file.

I can't get through to the retailer to ask wtf is going on. However, to me, this suggests that a shipment has been booked with DHL, but that the package has not been given to DHL - it's just a data flow. Am I right about this? Are the retailer really so brazenly dishnoest as to claim they have shipped a package that they have not?

--

Rather worryingly, their customer service has since been the worst I have ever known; they don't reply to e-mails, and their customer service line is constantly queued (3 hours 13 minutes last time I phoned). They answer the sales line instantly, but if you ask for customer services, it's just "you need to call the customer service number. Click".

Thankfully, I paid by CC, so I've still got a chargeback as an option. However, the CC company have suggested as they didn't *guarantee* a delivery date, I should wait 30 days from the date of order before initiating a chargeback - which seems reasonable enough.

--

Cliffs:
1. Bought phone from shady dealer
2. Received shipping confirmation 10 days ago.
3. Item not received.
4. Tracking infromation says "Shipping information received".

Shipping information received means it's only been setup online. Not until it's updated as package received etc do you have confirmation that DHL is handling whatever package they received from the shipper.

Who did you order from?

If you do not have it in your hands on day 31, file the chargeback.

shippers can send out shipping info to the carrier which means nothing.
When the carrier actually gets their hands on the shipment; they update the tracking info.
1) Carrier may not get around to pickup for 3-4 days after being notified - not likely for international carriers
2) Shipper may have to deliver to the carrier and paperwork is faster than the product delivery.
3) Shipper may generate shipping invoices to stall customer inquires.

I bought from an outfit called Simply Electronics. I made a mistake and had got them mixed up with a company of a similar name that was excellent, and with whom I did a lot of business (it turns out they were bought out by a competitor).

Unfortunately, as I thought I was dealing with someone that I had previously dealt with, I didn't bother to check them out properly before confirming the order.

Anyway, I've since googled them, and you can read a few reviews:

Ouch, that's brutal. Looks like it's all about your cc company coming thru for you now. Good luck with it.

I can't say anything about the company you bought from but, DHL is by far the worst shipping company out there. The often don't update the shipping info til after it's delivered. Hope you didn't get burned by the original company.

Well. Things have taken a turn for the weird.

The item has turned up at my local DHL delivery point. Having been collected approximately 20 miles away.

I guess it must have been drop-shipped from a local depot, just by an extremely slow and disorganised bunch.

If he gets what he wanted out of the deal, it's all to the good.

Well. A package containing a Samsung I9300 arrived today.

What was in it. An opened box - warranty card removed.
Hong kong charger
Phone - No warranty (serial number checked with Samsung)

Phone works. Except that it's got Chinese firmware on it - so it's completely useless, as I speak less Chinese than FuzzyBabyBunny.

I was going to root the phone anyway, so I'm not that bothered about the warranty. But I was hoping for a slightly shallower learning curve.
