I have a Win 2000 Server running with 2 nics currently using ICS for client computers to connect. The problem with using ICS is that when you get more then 5 comps connected then ICS stopps giving out IPs untill the server is rebooted.

Using DHCP how do I configure it so that the clients can surf the web? Do I need the DNS server installed and running? If so how should that be configured?

I have tried entering the DNS server address of my ISP into the scope in DHCP server and the client comps get that list but still cant access websites.

This home server is used to host the internet connection up to about 20 computers when LAN parties with friends are hosted here and ICS fails to connect every computer on the first try without rebooting the server comp to let more comps connect.

Thanks

Windows ICS does not have hard and fast limitations on clients. Like most NAT devices, its limited by two factors - [1] the number of IP addresses of the trusted network, and [2] the number of free source ports on the untrusted network. For most home networks, this is usually over 250 machines with over 250 connections each.

The ICS service has a micro DHCP server built in. You do not need to use the NT DHCP Service included in Windows 2000 Server. Same goes for DNS.

If you need additional help, try this troubleshooting link.

ToeJam13 - I do not have ICS running along with the DHCP Server or DNS server also running

dc5 - For the DNS IP can I use my ISP's DNS server IP addresses so I dont have to set one up my self (I did try using my ISP's DNS without any luck)? Would my internet server (Comp also running DHCP) be the Defult Gateway or do I need something else installed before it can be the Defult Gateway?

Thanks

configure your server to have static ip. set the server's dns to its own ip address, not your isp's dns. your default gateway would be your router, since you dont have one use your server's ip address.

I now have my server running the DHCP service and the client computers get a IP address in the scope but when you try to go to a site like yahoo it times out. I can ping yahoo.com from the clients with yahoo's IP displayed but yahoo cant be pinged.

What else do I need setup?

Try doing an 'ipconfig /all' from the workstations. Look to see who is the DNS server. If its your ISP's servers, you're good. If its your Win2k box's address, try using the 'nslookup' command on the workstations and send a few hostnames through. If its not working, then the DNS proxy in ICS is failing. You can either set up the Win2K box's DNS service to act as a DNS forwarder, or you can just manually set the workstation's DNS to that of your ISP's DNS server.
