DHCP will not work on this computer.

Is there something you can do that normally fixes issues with not being able to get an IP address?

Even if I load up safe mode with networking the computer is not getting an IP address from the router using either of the network cards installed, the router works just fine on other computers.

DHCP service is running, what the heck could be wrong?

If I manually specify an IP and a DNS server it will get online, but DHCP isn't working.

and you already bypassed the router (computer connected to modem) to rule out the router?

how many IP's is the router set to use for DHCP?

The router is set to give 60 IPs, and so far it's given out 20. My modem using an Static IP so that won't really work, how could it be the router? The router is giving all other computers IPs without a problem. I think it's a problem on the computer end but if you have something I can try to see if it could possibly be the router I'll try it.

Cable or DSL?

DSL would give out IP via DHCP
Cable would give out IP via DHCP, but it may assign it by MAC address, meaning you have to power off the cable modem for a few minutes, then power it on, plugged into the new PC

Youve plugged the PC into other ports on the router to make sure its not that 1 port?

Need more details about the router, setup, OS, and recent changes? Is this a new build? Autoconfig ip 169.254.x.y? Any software firewalls? Try to repair LSP-TCP/IP stack? Hard to say without more information.

There are few other services that are needed to be run, make sure that every service that is needed for proper Network work is Auto On.

1. Try to assign a free IP to the NIC, and then ping other devices on the network
2. If you still cannot ping with a static IP, try replacing the NIC.
3. I've seen viruses/spyware cause this problem, and had to clean the machine off with AV/Spyware programs to be able to get network connectivity.

I would break out wireshark and the old school hub to make sure you are sending requests/getting replies, to break down if it's the machine or not.

QFT

From the sounds of it, I would lean towards the winsock being corrupted and the NIC grabbing the autoconfig up of 169.X.X.X. Happens all the time due to spyware and the removal of it. But it could be a host of issues.

Thanks for your reply's.
In the end I don't remember what I did that fixed it except I did remove 1 client from the DHCP list, also I did a system restore to a while back. Still doesn't make sense to me though, it should give out 60 IPs before it will refuse to give out any more. I don't have another nic with a differn't mac to test to see if the router will give out more then 20 right now but I guess when I plug in another one I will see if that is the issue.

I don't know if I should start a new topic or not but ok you guys were right it is my router. In the DHCP settings I have it set to give out IPs 1 through 60. However after it gives out number 20 it will not give out anymore. The only way to get a new computer to get a DHCP address is to remove 20 from the list and the next one that connects gets asssigned 20. This is an SMC router SMC7004BR. What gives? I guess it could be the firmware, is there any other reason it would only give out 20 IPS?

Can you change the range of IP's its giving out?

maybe its something with that range it doesnt like. (ie move it from .20-.800 to .110-.170)
