DHCP problem

Built a Linux box (red hat 5.2) about 1 yr ago to do ipmasquerading as a router to share my cable modem. The system worked flawlessly on my home network until I powered down both the server and cable modem for vacation. The server now has the old ip address listed for eth0 and the cable modem has acquired a different address (the cable modem works fine when connected directly to a windows box. Rebooting does not change anything. Running DHCPCD -r resets the inet adresses to 0.0.0.0 but the router reacquires the old address when dhcpcd restarts or if I use the ifup eth0 command.
Any help on how to get the linux server to acquire the correct cable modem ip address would be greatly appreciated.
