DHCP problem - not assigning IP

just yesterday when i booted my media server, i could no longer connect to the internet.

I have this directly connected to my router and my main PC and modded xbox connect just fine.

ipconfig /all showed that Windows Autoconfiguration was ENABLED and had assigned an IP address 196.254.xx.xx or something like that.

i've tried ipconfig /release the /renew, but that didn't work.

any ideas on how to stop autoconfiguration from assigning it an IP?

thanks
robert.

169.254 addresses are not valid IP addresses. Basically, it's assigning itself that address when it does not get one through a DHCP Server.

Do you have another network cable you could try?
Tried turning off/on your router?

Assign the NIC a LAN IP address and connect to the Internet. If it doesn't work, its either your cable or the port that is bad.
