DHCP General Quesions

I just got a Gateway GS400 NAS. It has DHCP Server Software built into it but I am having problems getting it to work properly.

It is not assigning all of the IP Addresses I need. All it is assigning is the Computer IP address. It is not assigning the Gateway or DNS servers. This is really pissing me off because I just can't understand why it would assign one address but not the others. I have given it all of the information that it needs. It is just not working.

I guess my question is. Does anyone know if there is a DHCP Server anywhere that just assigns the Computer IP Address and not all of the others that I need. I would not think so, but?

My question is...why use DHCP?

DHCP is great for a large business or companies with 100+ computers. For a home user with 5 computers or so, why use it? Static IPs are so much better in my opinion. For instance, you know what IP address each of your devices are on your network. If you open ports on your router or you set up a IP that is restricted then you don't have to worry about DHCP assigning a IP address to the wrong system.

If you really want to run DHCP, I would recommend using another device to assign your IP addresses. It sounds like this gateway just isn't cutting it. My company uses Windows 2000 Server and it works great running as a DHCP server. I also have a linksys router and it did a good job as well.

Well, dhcp is great for anyone that doesn't want to deal with IP's and resetting their network. I use it myself whenever I bring a laptop home from work and hook it up to my 2 pc network with a broadband router.

Here's my experience tho. A lot of these routers will assign the DNS server as the router's internal IP. The router must be doing DNS forwarding as well in this case. Is that what you are seeing or are you not getting ANY IP for DNS?

This is for a business.

We have a few diffrent locations and many of our technicians move laptops from one location to another.

I just can not get it to assign all of the addresses that I need it to. (ie. Gateway Address and DNS Servers) I have never heard of a DHCP Server that did not assign those addresses. Which is why I am so confused.

Gateway has absolutely no idea and have not provided much technical support. Oh well. Thanks anyways.

I hate to tell you this but all DHCP servers I've seen only assign the IP, by default (can't help being a smart a$$ sometimes ). The DNS, gateway, WINS, etc. are the scope(or global) options that need to set. You say you've configured them, but when you go to the DHCP server's management interface (never used any gateway NAS products before), can you see the scope and/or global options?? Can you edit those options?

I thought, could be wrong, that gateway (and maxtor too) were using embedded Windows 2000 server as the OS in their NAS products.
