DHCP client service fails to load.

I'm trying to get my sisters computer to work on broadband (it has always been on dialup) and have noticed it wont grab an IP address. I've been digging around and noticed the DHCP server client fails to load. Every other service starts, but it tells me a group or service that it depends on fails to start when I try to start it. Anyone heard of this?

well, I was a bit behind on it being on dialup. I was going to get sp2 and anything else once I got it running on broadband. I also tried to do the repair off the XP cd but once it came back, it DHCP still fails plus I get some kind of "windows just recovered from a serious error" message. I am guessing that message refers to DHCP or one of the reasons behind it failing, but the error message and code give me no indication as to what causes it (aren't most windows errors strangly like that? LOL)

Was Norton Antivirus (or something from the Norton line) recently removed from the system? I uninstalled it from my laptop, and just about every networking service wouldn't start. I don't remember what all I had to do - basically, sift through the registry and wipe out the numerous pieces that Norton left behind.

It might just have been, I will try that. I know there was a really nasty virus on there earlier that I had to get off there for her, but I don't remember the name of it.

hm, you could try reinstalling the TCP/IP stack with the following command

`netsh int reset resetlog.txt' (i think that's it at least)

if that doesn't want to work, you could also try going into the network protocols listed for the `Local Area Connection' and try readding `Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)'. Just do the install option, ie don't try removing it first (xp won't let you because it's mandatory for the os to operate correctly).

Both of the above will rewrite the registry setting pertaining to TCP/IP networking. Hopefully that'll do the trick.
