DHCP and XP

Can anyone offer some suggestions on why my Dell running XP will not acquire an IP using DHCP but works fine if I force a static IP on my LAN? I have SBC DSL if I connect the PC directly to the DSL modem it can't get an IP. If I connect it through my Netgear router using static it works fine. It has networking built into the MB and I tried installing a PCI card with the same results. I appreciate any help.

Networking equipment can be touchy. Disable your ethernet adapter on your computer, turn off your router, and turn off your modem. Turn on your modem again and wait a minute or two for all your lights (except PC) to come on. Then turn on your router. When your PC light comes on in the modem and your link lights come on on the router, finally enable the ethernet connection in your computer.

I know you're probably thinking, "WTF, I already tried that sh*thead!", but trust me it solved my networking problems more times than not. If this doesn't work for you then it's a configuration issue with your router or with your PC. Post back here with results and we'll work from there.

It's ambiguous what you're trying to do. I'm assuming you want this: modem -> router -> PC and the PC uses DHCP. Is that correct?

Thanks for the tip. I did not try things in exactly that order but will give it a shot. I apologize for the ambiguity. I have three identical work stations connected to a Netgear WT624 router. Two with wired connections and one wireless. I am trying to go modem -->router -->workstations. The wireless PC and one wired workstation see the router but couldn't get out to the internet. I solved that by setting DNS. But the third wired PC would see the router but would grab an IP until I set static.

Assuming you're using win2k/xp, open up a command line and paste the results of 'ipconfig /all' for the working and non-working connections here.

Open your network connections and tell me the status of the LAN devices. Right click on the mobo's link, select properties. Double-click the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" item and tell me what it says under both tabs.
