I've been averaging 50 C on idle for chipset temps.
is it too hot?
I am using SpeedFan Ver 4.23 to evaluate this

CPU temp is only 38 C on idle
 
Hey Ed,

How is the airflow through your case? Make sure your wiring/cabling is as neat as possible. You may want to add an auxillary fan to blow on the chipset. I added a 90mm fan (1600rpm) and dropped the chipset idle temp from 51C to 45C, and that is with a chipset fan speed of of only 3400rpm, where I like to run it to keep the noise down. See HERE. Load temps hit about 52C max (in 78F room temp). When I have the board out of the case next time, I am going to apply AS5 on the chipset HSF. Should get a nice drop there too. Although I haven't heard an official answer, what I have been reading suggests any temp under 60C is satisfactory.....Here is a shot of my Speedfan in action: http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1093

then again Im living near the equator, so maybe that makes a difference,
airflow is pretty good, but I will add another 2 fans on the side panel to get more air flowing in then
since 60 is acceptable puts off the worry factor. But I will definately try to get it lower.
 
AS5 will hardly do anything. I have actually seen peoples temps go UP by 5c! I would recommend just leaving it. The chipset should be good up to 70cish anyway

Only ways to cool it off easily are to a) move your video card to 2nd pic-e slot b)cool off your room


Also theres a program called "Smartguardian" included on the DFI cd. This is the program DFI supports and its rather good. Try that
 
i used AS ceramique and got ~5c better. ITE shows and idle 40 and 45 load. thats with 2000 rpm on the fan.
 
I got over 5c better too with Arctic Silver 5 also am running it overclocked at 275mhz FSB and increased the chipset voltage and LDT voltage by 0.1v each and am only getting 35/36c at idle and 39/40c at full load.

I would love to have put my swiftech 159 chipset cooler on it but no room, wish dfi had moved the chipset out of the way of the first pci-e slot, might have tried putting the graphics card on the second slot but then i wouldn't be able to do sli when i eventually upgrade to it.

But hey it is a million times better than the Asus A8N-SLI I had which just kept rebooting and was rubbish at overclocking and could never get it to work at 1T reliably and the hardware monitoring chip gave out too one day after trying to overclock it, doh!

Very impressive VooDoo collection Ed 🙂 I owned a couple of those truly innovative cards myself.

My CPU is a 3500+ Winchester, OC to 2.48 GHz, 1.44v. Are you running a Winchester or other? The Winnies run pretty cool. Either way, a little more airflow through the case should help a bit more. Every processor I've ever put AS5 on, I've seen a drop in temp, so if you want to go that far, it is worth doing. If the temp goes up, the application or seating is wrong. AS5 surpasses all pads and paste in thermal conductivity.

I also just installed an Arctic Cooler ATI Silener 5.2 on my x800xl. It has helped to get more heat out too (15-20C drop in GPU temp at load). Best part is, it's quiet as heck at 100% fan speed.

Still using AS3, as my tube just can't seem to finish up.

Thanks for the compliment on the voodoo collection 🙂 honestly I dont even know if it will be a good investment. But I sure did spend more then I should already with prototype cards

now actually I do have a water cooling block that I want to us. "CORSAIR COOL"
however I notice the CPU cooling block I had is for Athlon XPs
and it has an uneven surface.
don't know if I should take the risk and proceed with installation.

now that I am back in Malaysia,
its almost impossible to do a return. Got that water cooling kit from SVC.com.
They must have mixed up and I did not realize it since I saw from the picture that I got a good Socket 939 CPU water cooling block along with it.

bleh, so I am running everything at stock currently. good thing I bought a retail Box CPU instead of an OEM.
 
AS3 is great stuff, I have used 5 and 3 and don't see a heck of alot of difference. What week of Winchester do you have? Mine is a 3500+ CBBID 0505 and running 275x9=2475 MHz. It idles about 34C with 42C at max load. You may not need water cooling ever as alot of the 05xx Winnies don't OC very well. So temperature may never be an issue if you plan to stick with that CPU for awhile. It simply may never generate enough heat to warrant water cooling. I am topped out because of the CPU memory controller limitation at around 2.5GHz @ 1.44v. Using a Zalman 7000Cu, the temps never get over 42C. That is one nice thing about Winchester, great performance and low op temperature. AMD's Winchester's are superb even if the memory controller is lame on the 05xx. The stock cooler will go very far with this CPU, the only reason I switched to Zalman was to reduce noise.

I think when you add your side door fans, you will see temps go down further. From the looks of how you describe your system, I doubt very much you are going to have any heat related issues ever with the Winnie. Good luck my friend....

hmm, since I already bought the water cooling it,
might as well use it right?

otherwise its gonna be wasted anyway.
I haven't gone ahead to OC it yet.

got a panaflo 92mm fan to use and another 2 80mm,
one is a panaflo M1A another one is a YS tech Variable fan.
Will definately use up all fans as I do not have a soundcard just below the X800 XL

so 2 on the side panel and one more just below the video card to extract air
the thermaltake case itself comes with a 120mm fan just right next to the CPU

 
Just had 2 panaflos attached on the side panel,
how I have a third fan that I can place right below the video card,
do you think blowing it inwards and let my 120mm fan near the CPU extract it out,
or should I do likewise blowout ?

don't know which would provide a better airflow

btw, chipset temps drop by a good 5C !!
to 45C now

Nice drop! 🙂 It's really trial and error. Try all possible fan directions and monitor temps. Use whatever gives you the best results. No right or wrong way really. You may notice something I did too, using speedfan, run the speed down to 3400rpm on the chipset. You shouldn't see the temp increase that much if it does at all, but the howling will go away. It doesn't seem the chipset fan speed does much to help drop the temp between 3500-7000rpm. But, the noise reduction is great.

I didn't mean to suggest not using the water cooling setup, I was just saying you may not need to with a Winchester as they run pretty cool as is on air and depending on the production week, don't OC that well. Certain weeks of them do though and water cooling is indeed a bonus.

You may want to consider one of those ATI Silencer 5.2 coolers. I put one on my x800xl and it idles at 40C with max load temp of 55C. About a 15-20C drop in load temps. Nice thing is that the exhaust air for the cooler exits the back of the case unlike the stock cooler which just blows it back in. Even at 100% speed the fan is very quiet. If you can do it, I'd highly recommend it.

It does block the chipset fan a bit more, but doesn't effect the temp of it. I still have the fan blowing on it.

thats for sure.

but note taken,. I need a 3 pin connector to 4 pin power first before I could test the flow. Just ran out of it, LOL seems like I got too many fans already.
yeah kinda regret not buying just a thermalright heatsink and a good fan to blow the winnie

I will have to remove the chip again to check its production week. Hope to update you soon with that.
 
Mine is CBBID 0505 and I've got it to 250x10 so far on 1.47v with 2.5-3-3-8-1T ram timings, DDR500 @ 2.8v. I am not much of a voltage freak as I like to keep things cool and quiet as possible. I have tried 2.53 but start to error. I am pretty certain 2.6 is not realistic without some heavy tweaking (prob never would though as the memory controller is more than likely topped out). If it was achievable, it would still run relatively very cool. Anyway give it heck and good luck 😉

sounds like u got a good 2.5Ghz with that XP3200+

don't know how to medal with HTT settings,
since u are also using a DFI,
maybe u can help me out. I read Zebo's overclocking guide, but I guess I gotta know my bios better before doing anything.

Actually I have 3500+ Win. Zebos guide is great, however, memory settings will really determine what direction you go with the DFI, as you will surely become aware of. There are different bioses to take advantage of TCCD, BH-5, UTT, etc.. Your best bet is to hang out/research at the www.dfi-street.com forums, especially the motherboard and OC forums. They have good stickies there that will give you alot of good info.

I use Mushkin TCCD on Brainpower PCB and have managed to overclock stable with the following settings that I posted here: http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10492&highlight=mushkin

Mt settings are pretty typical fir TCCD on the Ultra-D.

 
It's 105 actually and is there for stability. It's where it ended up in my testing, nothing more to it really. There is a DFI employee over there that recommends 100-101 for Nvidia and 105 for ATI. All I know is that it works well.

Also, timings don't mean too much if you can run your CPU at peak frequency and ram at 1:1.

I can get my ram to DDR564 @ 2.5-4-4-11-1T and the benchmarks there show it destroying my other benchmarks if I run DDR400 2-2-2-6 or for that matter DDR500 at 2.5-3-3-7. The bandwidth perfromance is increased 25%. However, benchies aren't everything and real world operation shows alot closer performance (2-6%) between DDR400 (tight) and DDR600 (loose). But, a gain is a gain no matter how you look at it, and memory bandwidth does indeed beat timings.
