DFi recommends a 480w psu for the Lanparty series, but is the Ocz 450w Modstream enough?

I really like the looks and neat cable management of the modstream. I can also purchase it fairly cheap off of monarchcomputer.com for $75 shipped. Dfi Street/Dfi's forum says that a minumum of 480watts is needed to run the dfi lanparty series....that seems a little overkill to me. Will the modstream run this system overclocked?

Antec p160
Dfi Nf3 250gb Lanparty
Athlon 64 3200+ Newcastle w/xp-120
3x120mm fans
2xcd/dvd drives
1xhdd
6800gt ultra agp
santa cruz sound card

Or do I need to spend $25 more for the 520w model? I really don't want to spend $100 on a psu!

It should run fine but don't expect to be able to use SLI w/ that PSU and you might have issues if you try and upgrade to a next gen card as they are supposed to be very power hungry

Edit: I see you have the socket 754 agp version, for that Motherboard that power supply is more than fine, my little brother is runing something similar off a 350 watt antec SL350, the 480 watt PSU rec. on DFI street is only for their NF4 series of mainboards.

That psu is fine. There is not really any point to the 520 watt version anyway because they both have 26 amps on the 12v.

So do you think the antec 350watt smartpower psu that I have currently can power this rig...Lots of ocing involved

BFG 6800gt agp
Dfi Nforce3 250gb Lanparty
A64 3000+ Newcastle
1xhdd
2xcd/dvd drives
Santa Cruz Sound Card
3xcase fans
Ocz Value Vx 2x512mb

BFG says that a minimum of 350watts is needed to runt he agp 6800gt....is that risking it or just enough? I don't want to have to buy a new psu if I don't have to!

I ran more hardware (with 6800GT) than you do, and I turned out fine with a 330w 3 year old Enermax PSU.

Hardware companies always exaggerate the hell out of the power requirements. As long as you have a quality PSU >380 watts you'll be fine.

480 watts with 24 pin is for NF4 only! don't worry about your NF3 board. Good Power supply!!

I am in the same shoes as you scheibler4... im gettin a DFI NF4 though and I only have an Enermax 460W with 20 pin cable and 33A on 12v. I was so pissed off when i read those requirements at DFI... but im more than sure that my Enermax will be just fine... the thing im afraid of is that will a 20 to 24 pin adapter work fine with it or not...

That 450W is rated up to 550W max.

The Modstreams are outstanding PSUs, quite adequate for your needs.

i would be less concerned about the 460 than the 20 pin. it'll probably work but it may cause you some headaches. at least you have an enermax and the strong 12v rail.

keep in mind also the board has 4 power connectors, 1 of which is a fdd  so if you don't have 2 fdd cables you might want to get an adapter.

that really should be updated as all nf4 mobos recommend a native 24 pin connector. dfi "requires" it but the fact is 10% of the members at dfi.street said in a poll they were still using 20 pin.

i'm not saying it won't work but i think the thread is wrong to imply that people don't need to worry about something the manufacturers are recommending you use. especially as people seek buying advice from here so much.

that 480 is a "safe" recommendation

so if your PSU is as good as a cheap 480w you're fine

woops,
i have an Enermax 460W 24 Pin PSU though, didn't know DFI suggested 480W and above to be safe.
good thing the X800 XL doesn't need that much power and I am Not running SLI

You DEFINITELY need a 24-pin ATX2.0.1 compatible power supply to power the DFI motherboards.
IF you are going for SLI, then 480W is recommended.
If you don't go for SLI, high-quality >380W would do

what I meant by safe is that 480w is for the way cheap PSU makers rate PSU's so that people with them arent screwed and go "Hey my PSU says 380w why isn't it working right???"

I know that my OCZ Power Stream has two numbers. The watt rating they advertize and a "maximum" wattage rating which is probably how it would have rated their PSUs if they were a no name company.

like someone above said, the modstream's peak is 550, most companies would advertise that as a 550... i'm using the modstream 450 right now and it's super stable.
