Hi Tech Guys

Need some advice for troubleshooting

My Desktop have been having intermittent boot up issues recently

The Mobo detects CPU, Memory and VGA as indicated with the 3 red lights but will not boot up

Well, it did boot up once yesterday for whatever apparent reasons after I switched off the main plug for a while. The system worked fine for that one time, temperatures were also good.

Had anyone gone through such issues before with this board?
Is there any troubleshooting guide on this?
Do I need to replace the battery?

** I did realize that the "power light" was blinking every time it fails to boot up **
Could this be insufficient power supply? faulty PSU?
I am using a 460W ENERMAX powering a AMD athlon 3000+ winchester core, 1 GB XMS Ram (512 x 2) ATI X800XL VGA Card, 2 HDD (which is a maxtor 300GB and a 74GB raptor)
On board sound, DVD-ROM

reset cmos, use only ONE stick of ram to begin w/, and read up on which ram slot is best for the DFI. After the 1st stick is working, add the 2nd one.

My memory is a bit hazy (the dfi nf4 are 3years old now mate), but mine was always finicky w/ order of ram being inserted and in which slots (orange or yellow). GL
 
The board is finicky all right, but mine ran for 2.5+ years 24/7 once I made it "happy".

Use the MemTest built into the BIOS to check your RAM... use a DMM to check your PSU's rail output and see if it's gone flaky.

For the bios mem check, thats if the computer boots up that I can use this mem check isn't it?
I don't even get the first beep to start with
fan runs, powers up, power light blinking, detects VGA, CPU and memory


 
I had a similar thing happen to me. For me one of my sticks of ram was bad. I ended up using a spare one i had and RMAd my 2 OCZ sticks.
 
I had the exact same problem a couple of years ago, turned out to be an incompatibility of some sort between the mobo and the power supply (Seasonic S12). I replaced the Seasonic with an OCZ PSU and it's been working fine ever since.
 
so I would limit it to either the PSU or the memory
but the best part is that it did start up once, and there was no sign of memory fault either

I will try changing the PSU first
 
I was given the same DFI 939 board. The person who gave it to me said it was dead. The board would not boot or post (I think only 3 LED would light up). The problem turned-out to be a bad fan on the nForce chip. With no power to the mother board, see if the fan on the nForce chip turns freely. I replaced the fan on the chip with a Evercool VC-RE Twinkling VGA cooler & the board worked fine. My first post, but this forum has always helped me. The original DFI fan does not last long (the DFI sticker on the nForce chip fan can look burnt/discoloured). I do not know about the DFI board, but some motherboards will not work unless the nforce chip fan is turning at a certain RPM in order to protect the chip.

I have just tried to switch on the power again, noticed that the fan on the board is moving fine

 
okay,

I have tried the followings and my system still does not boot up :-(

-Change to a good memory and test
-Changed memory slots and restarted PC
-replace to a new PSU (800W-gigabyte)
-remove CMOS battery, restart, then fixed battery back into position



Any other things that i have missed out in this troubleshooting process?
Or do I have to concede that the motherboard is pretty much gone

Result: Power Light still flashing rapidly
the 3 red lights are still lit up , detects ,CPU, VGA and Memory
But missing the 4th light which is for boot up



 
I remembered that when I changed the chip set fan the original thermal compound on the old fans heat sink was dried-out. Also, I had the battery out & the clear cmos jumper set for two days while waiting for the new chip set cooler. I also put a new battery in the computer. In adittion, I remember the board would only boot with the 2 sticks of memory in the orange slots, not the yellow slots ( I remembered the DFI board was different from other motherboards ) Before I started to work on this board, I unplugged the power cord from the power supply & pushed the start button to help discharge the board. I have had memory go bad before, so make sure the memory is good. I don't know if that will help because it seems you tried it all. Might want to try without keyboard or mouse.

seem like the boot up works after changing to a new battery
though sometimes it gets cranky as when I reset, it will just stall

at least it boots up now although running at stock speeds
I just completely forgotten how I Overclocked to the sweet spot at 2.4 Ghz lol
