Hmm....

My friend's DFI all of a sudden decided to stop working. It just hangs at Verifying DMI Pool Data....

I'm still waiting for a response from him. He said he'll check his harddrive and make sure everything's tight. He didn't really install anything recently (besides some drivers for his scanner)...

While I wait for a call back from him, any other tips? We did Load Optimized Defaults and it didn't really do much.

Thanks,

I don't pay too much attention to DFI problem threads because I've never even owned a DFI board. But I know I've seen this problem before. Try doing a search in here and the MB area. Even going back >90 days.
Also, check DFIstreet forums if you haven't already.

usually I just disconnect the IDE cables, reboot, power down, reconnect IDE cables, restart, and that usually cures the problem. Don't know the details behind it, but it works, so I continue to do it when in a jam.

My verifying dmi pool problem was solved by installing another harddrive, I didn't even get to the point of installing xp or anything. Bios and everything worked fine, it just got stuck at verifying dmi pool.

did it hang on the restart when the drives were disconnected?

Edit: this has happened to me when my drive has gone belly up. It just hangs no matter what until the drive is removed.

He said that right before "Verifying DMI Pool data" he saw "SATA master disk hdd SMART Capability... Disabled"

One classic cause of this is that there's a Western Digital ATA/100 drive hooked up, it is on a cable by itself, and it is not properly jumpered for Single Master (Single Master != Master). If that happens to be the case, have him pull the jumper off the pins (that's the Single Master setting) and try again.

Err, now this kid tells me that he did 4 system restores yesterday....that might explain the source of his problems. Just want to verify if this before I tell him to reinstall windows or something.

Thanks,

Update: This is kind of embarrassing.

His boot sequence went fubar'd apparently. When we built it, we set it to "Removable" as the first boot device, followed by the HD.... He had nothing in his floppy drive, but it wouldn't boot up for whatever reason. He just set it to HD and it worked.

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best one...

God what a crazy day.

Yeah, this happened with me too. I tried everything and I couldn't fix it. I just ended up reformatting. No big, since it was just my little web server with no important data on it.
