DFI Infinity vs DFI Lanparty Ultra vs ASUS A8R-MVP vs epox EP-9NPA-Ultra

I currently have this thread in general hardware asking for comments on a prospective build, but with so many componants I'm not getting the feedback I would like. I decided to break down the few remaining undecided options into smaller threads.

In my original thread I selected the DFI Infinity, and thought it was a good choice. It was cheap, overclocked very well, from DFI, and Anandtech choose to use it in their s939 OC'ing article. It has not been well recieved by others in the thread however, and most have recommended the epox EP-9NPA-Ultra. Considering I am on a budget so I would like to save if possible, but that performance comes first, and also considering I do NOT need gigabit ethernet, RAID, or firewire, which motherboard would you recommend?

*bump to the top*

I know this thread was still on the front page, but this componant is really the only one that I'm still undecided about.

DFI Lanparty UT NF4 Ultra-D/SLI-D/SLI-D Expert are IMO the best enthusiast Nforce4 boards money can buy. The only reason the Epox, ASUS etc. boards are in the mix is if price is an issue.

If you can swing the extra money, I'd go for one fo the aforementioned DFI Lanparty motherboards.

If I remember right the Lanparty boards don't include any com ports or parallel ports. So if you have a laser printer needing the parallel port or on dial up needing a comm port it is probably better to choose the Epox wouldn't you think? Thinking about ditching my AX8 and going with the new Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe, or an Epox Ep-PNPA ultra if I can't get the cold boot problem fixed with the AX8. I think on the Asus I would wait until a second revision of the board comes up.

best I can tell though the Infinity is only missing the pretty colors and fancy wiring, so isn't it just as good performance wise?

no. i had the infinity and sent it back and got another ultra-d like i should have in the first place.

check the dfi main site for a comparison but there are many differences, including the actual size of the board, the chipset fan, features, bios options etc...

you should be able to find some deal on a lan party. i'd spend the extra $$.

theres also a thread or few about the infinty if you do a search here. 🙂

I'm not an expert in these matters myself but I also have the same dilemna. Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I am not looking for an SLI mobo right now. I also want to overclock and the A8R impressed me because it overclocks really well. Considering the features of both the Dfi Ultra-d and the A8R-MVP and assuming they are the same price, which I highly doubt, (also considering I won't be using BH5 - VX & Redline) wouldn't it be better to get the Asus once it comes out? Any opinions would be helpful to me as well.... Also the DFI has a noisy little fan while the Asus is passive and I noticed that you're going to be using a ninja, I will also be using one, so I suppose a quiet if not silent computer is important to you.

No worries about thread hijacking, we have the same concerns. I don't need extra noise if its avoidable, but that takes a distant third to performance and price. The epox option seems to compete against the Infinity, but I can't find a chart to see how well it overclocks, and since I will only have a 9x multiplier I need all the FSB I can get. The Asus seems to compete more against the LanParty, and at that price I can't help but think the ASUS is better.
