DF question

RU482

Lifer
Does the OS you're running effect the # of folds?

Has anyone experimented with different OS's to see which would work best? i.e. 98, Win 2k, WinXP, linux...ect

if I build up a cruncher, I'd like to try linux, just curious if it's worth it

in my experience DF is slower in Redhat 8 than Win2k.... i think there was a thread floating around about that earlier today

Be sure to let us know what you find out if you try it Redly1.

I suspect any difference you see would be due to the OS's handling of priorities.

Were it me, I'd be tempted to tamper with the DF priority setting in XP if I wasn't doing much else with the box. However, my machines main function in life is that of an arcade for my son and his budz, so I need to keep priority low (I like how DF steps out of the way... we never have to turn it off)

on same hardware

win9x is faster than XP

w2K is slightly faster than XP

at the beginning of the project, linux was faster than windows, but this might vary with the way it's run (running inside X windows vs console only , etc)

when i get some free time at work (february/march) i am going to do the following

setup two sets of computers , six computers in each set.
one set of celeron 1.1 Ghz, one set of p3 1 Ghz pc's

load onto the six , the following OS's

win95
win98
w2k server
win XP pro
linux (probably RH)
freebsd

and then benchmark them all, with the various switches , -rt , -qt, etc
and get some results published

i just don't have time to do it right now

After reading this post, i gained some curiousity in the subject... and i'm glad i did.... under RedHat 8, i was getting really poor times.... then i went and changed the priority from default(idle) to +1 and it absolutely klobbers my other computer(w2k) of the same clock speed..... although.... it isnt on idle anymore... but from what i can see so far(3 hours) it doesnt make that much of a difference. so there you go.... if you're running a crackrack, go with Redhat 8, or another linux... although i cant guarantuee speed with anything else..... and just crank the priority setting.

edit:
just to let you know the speed difference..... my Athlon XP 1700+@1.65 is doing ~5 structures/sec versus my Athlon XP1800+@1.53 does 1-2 structures/sec, both comps have 256mb ram, both have a kt266a chipset.... although the 1700+ does have a fsb of 150mhz over 133mhz..... you decide which OS is faster...
