Rita had pretty much run her course as a character. She was just a whiny b*tch at the end.

Yeah, I agree with that. I guess I was pretty shocked by the ending and felt badly for the character we've come to empathize with, but he had to suffer some sort of a loss of something at some point. Perhaps the producers wanted to write her out of the series?
If the season had had a happy ending then I guess Season 5 would be wide open for...whatever. Perhaps they concluded that the family gig was weighing down what they could do with the story and that it's usefulness should run its course?
There are some
loose ends remaining. Dexter is still facing jail time for fleeing the scene of an accident and now he has to explain why Trinity killed his wife specifically and WTF he was doing in Trinity's garage before the rest of Miami Metro arrived and if the family talks about this mysterious Kyle Butler person who ran out the back door as the police were coming in the office will go looking for him.
