February 17th CBS is going to start showing Dexter.
I assume they will start with first season.
But what are they going to have to do to make the show safe for network tv?

Butcher it.

Anyone catch the Sopranos on A&E? Don't.

Honestly, Dexter isn't as grotesquely violent as I thought it would be. And other than some minor nudity and the sister's foul mouth, there's very little to edit. It'll be a smoother transition to network than the Sopranos to A&E, IMO.

All the episodes of Dexter are around 50-55 minutes of content.

A network hour long show is usually only 40-41 minutes of content and 20 minutes of commercials. So CBS would have to cut some content to fit it in their hour long time slot or show it commercial free. Not sure how the network would handle the length of the show.

They'll have no trouble making it fit. There's plenty of material to work with that they can edit or omit scenes and still maintain the story line. It's also not all that violent a show considering the topic. They can work around the blood and dismemberment, they never really focus too much on Dexter doing his thing on his victims.

I don't think it's going to fly though. Network TV is not ready for Dexter. They're going to have every bored housewife in middle America writing to their sponsors 10 seconds into episode one. This will cause a bigger s**t-storm than CBS is prepared to deal with. I give it 3 weeks and it'll be gone. I know the networks are desperate for any original material they can get because of the writers strike, but I doubt this is going to be the answer.

Treat it like a R movie on network TV I guess. I wonder how they'll handle Deb or Doakes? They should just use beeps instead of dubs. I think I'll watch the first ep for laughs.

Dexter is awesome. This is actually good for the show though. More exposure and more episodes for the Showtime version!

It's a cartoon. Why would they have to censor it? o_O

Just looked it up, I didn't realize that it had been picked up for a third season. Last I read it was done after season two.

Hopefully it gets better treatment that Die Hard did. Seeing Bruce Willis calling the bad guys airheads after they killed someone kind of ruined any impact the scene may have had. :p
