That is your opinion. Obviously if the apps were so terrible and never worked, who the hell would use them? They obviously work well enough to help Android be the hottest platform today.

Let's be serious here, android apps are functional and that is all. For a lot of people that is ok, but apps that are just good enough isn't something for me. I look at the android market and for every one good app they have iOS has 5 better ones. What's even worse is that the worse out of the 5 is better than the android version.

Androids got widgets and customizations but when it comes to apps it's not even a competition. Android users always preach "Its quality not quantity", well iOS has got android beat in both aspects.

Android will eventually get a large library of quality apps, but that day isn't today.

So you are saying the Cliq is responsible for Android outsellling iOS?

OK.....

Dunno the % it actually accounts for, but the Verizon kiosk at the local mall has offered me 2 free Moto Droids for signing a contract. I would imagine if my malls kiosk does this, others will to. It may or may not make up for a noticeable percentage. But the fact is I've never seen an AT&T kiosk offer a free iPhone. But at least some people are getting their Androids for free.

mall kiosks are generally independant, not company stores. Company stores have to follow company pricing.

Indeed, but I would imagine since most malls have multiple cell phone kiosks this makes up for a decent amount of phones sold. And the AT&T kiosks never give away iPhones. Makes me wonder why, if an iPhone is $199 with a contract and my Droid 1 was the same, I should be able to get either for free.

AT&T will never give away iPhones for free cus that's pretty much their only money maker. AT&T wouldn't be where they are today without the iPhone.

Assuming today is today, then I agree.

But if we are assuming that AT&T doesn't have the iPhone, should we also assume that the iPhone was never released (since Verizon turned down the opportunity by all reckoning)? If we assume that, then Android is not what it is today, the Pre potentially never comes out, and WP7... a constant back burner idea.

Otherwise AT&T would be where it was 4 years ago, right up there with Verizon with the most customers in the country.

I think it is safer to say that Apple would never let AT&T give iPhones away for free. They don't want to dilute the image of the iPhone as a premium device by letting AT&T give it away. My understanding is that some carriers in other countries do have them for free or almost free, but at the end of the day Apple is an American company and tends to 'care' there first.

Who knows where we'd be in smartphone land today. The iPhone was the spark in the industry for smartphones. We know that they definitely helped move us along but we will obviously never know where we'd be without one. If Apple could give them away for free I'm sure they would. They'd make infinitely more money off the market, accessories, etc but as we know, Apple loves to make every red cent and they don't need to make them free cus everyone who wants one pretty much has one.

Of course we can't know, but I mean c'mon... you really think that it wouldn't have stayed same ol' same ol' with the carriers? A bunch of BBs, Treos and WinMo 6 devices, and those not even moving at all since there is no fun there, so it is just a bunch of dumbphones and feature phones.

Who's to know. Competition creates innovation. I thought Google was working on a smartphone even before the iPhone came out? We can only speculate. All we know is that the iPhone helped us where we are today.

Google acquired Android before the iPhone was announced (whether they would have had Eric Schmidt not heard during his tenure on Apple's board that Apple was working on their own phone is also speculation) and let's say they continued working on it. Images of it from even (I think) a month before the iPhone was announced were of what was clearly a Treo/BB clone. Small upper screen and physical keyboard.

I never said that the iPhone didn't get us to where we are today, all I was saying was that your statement that AT&T wouldn't be where it is today without the iPhone was not totally correct. They would just be in basically the same place they were 4 years ago. Namely, having millions of customers and competing with Verizon for the top spot.

They might not have had people breaking down the door to get their phones, but it isn't like any of the other carriers would either.

Apple had been working on iOS for the longest time. And yes Schmidt did have information about the iPhone/iOS because of his position on the board of directors.

And I think this shows. Google and Apple has invested a lot of time and money into their platforms and now look at who the current leaders are in the smartphone industry.

I know that, I was speculating on an alternate world where there was no iPhone. Google may have never bought Android if they didn't think that Apple was getting into the business.

The smartphone market wouldn't be anywhere near where it is now if Apple/Google didn't go into the smartphone business. We'd still probably have locked down phones with no apps and horrible media functionality.

We would all still be rocking feature phones with the Verizon red UI and browsing the internet on Opera Mobile.

That's what I am saying.
