Devin Nunes claims limiting the amount of plastic garbage in our environment is socialism.

Everything bad is socialism. And limiting our ability to pollute as fast as we want is bad. So his logic is sound.

To be a good republican you've got to be dumb as shit. Having even fewer morals than brain cells means you're electable.

Sometimes it baffles me that these people probably operate motor vehicles, use matches, etc.

Straws are great if you're driving or you're Michael J Fox, otherwise they're dumb. If auto manufacturers would bring back the land barge ride of yesteryear, we could eliminate straws in driving as well. The environmental benefit of heavy, long wheel base V8s is obvious.

Keep it up Nunes, he'll make the word "Socialist" more acceptable. I am happy when I go to a restaurant etc... and they don't use plastic straws. If not using a plastic straw is socialist, I'm socialist.

It's FAR too late, but keeping plastic out of the environment means keeping plastic out of our bodies. But as I said, the damage is already done.

The point now is to contain and limit future contamination. So (for example) 5 plastic bits per square inch of your gut does not become 10, 20, or even 100. Reduction and cleanup needs to start sooner rather than later.

Paper Straw
These are real? Do they even work? Cannot imagine they 1: survive moisture or 2: survive the power of suction.
The first plastic straw I ever saw was at McDonalds when I was 8 years old. I know we had paper straws all the way through HS and I graduated in 72. Yes in fact they do work. They are more subject to collapse if you let them sit in the liquid for a while though.

Uh, we have no plastic straw ban here, and waitstaff have been asking if we want straws for... I dunno, years? It never occurred to me that I could accidentally be promoting socialism here in one of the reddest states by declining straws.

I went to a restaurant a few weeks ago that had them. It was my first and only experience with them. They are pretty sturdy at first but after about 20 minutes it started losing integrity. I had to get another one when I went for a refill. The texture is weird and I can't comment on its effect on flavor because the restaurant sells some shitty local soda that tastes like shit no matter how you consume it.

These are real. I believe in the UK all McDonalds are using paper and they plan to eventually bring it to the US.
Honestly, though what reasonably motor coordinated adult is still voluntarily using straws to drink their beverages in a restaurant? Would you prefer a sippy cup and a high chair as well?

Nunes is advocating a one-size-fits-all approach, with restaurants making centralized decisions and doling out one straw per patron whether that person needs it or even wants it.

The alternative, where each individual can decide for him or herself on the best way to meet their needs and pursue those goals however they see fit is socialism?

In my experience in the US, straws for soda are almost ubiquitous with drinking while out.

I imagine it's to 1: support a lid, to prevent contaminants from being dropped in. 2: People think it's more sanitary to touch the straw they just unwrapped than the outside edge of a cup.

but never mind the warped mind of a democrat who makes a law to throw people in jail for giving out a straw and exempt fast food where the vast majority of straws are passed out. and you say republicans are dumb as shit? HAHAHAHAH

I've heard that the worst are all the teeeny tiny microscale particles of plastic which go directly into the foodstream. But, yea, we really should minimize all of our plastic waste. Landfills do their job well, but, too much crap gets into the water and will cause problems for generations.

Alternative facts of the post-truth kingdom of Trump, huh?
