Devils Lake is flooding?

This is something that I've just heard about and want to know what you guys thing (no news articles or anything)...

I heard that Devils Lake is flooding and at the moment the plan is to divert the water into the Red River. The Red River is a completely separate water system, so will there not be a big chance that there will be a large amount of damage done in terms of adding new pollution/bacteria/species into the system?

It's a concern to me as the Red goes right though the middle of my city.

 
ain't nothin gonna climb out of the red and eat you. They don't really know if any of the different biota in devils lake will harm the red, they are just playing it safe. The water there is alot saltier and that might harm some native species. Manitoba is still challanging the diversion project in whatever ways they can, so are people from the states. Some of my wife's family live in devils lake, and that sucker really is flooding! But, about 10 or 20 years ago it was so low that they wanted to divert water into it. Its just in a wet cycle right now. Don't have a cow about it man. Me, who works for the government aint getting too worried yet. (used ot live in wpg, now in brandon)
 
so it rained too much in CA ?

i thought you guys got all your water from colorado or something

Well I can't say that I'm worried, I just had not even heard about this until a few days ago. I haven't actually looked around to find information on the whole situation so I don't really have an opinion at the moment. My first reaction is that mixing different systems doesn't always have good consequences.

That's what I originally thought, which confused me because I live less than an hour away.
 
I'd be against it. Isn't Devil's Lake man-made anyways? Hm, I thought I once read it was...If they can build it, they can destroy it. My dad, brother, and I use to go fishing up there before it flooded several years back. The white bass were so much fun to catch from this one bridge, but now it's many many feet under water.

At any rate, I live here in Fargo, ND, so the Red River is just like 5 minutes from my house. You are north of me by quite a ways, so it probably wouldn't affect me much, but I do see your point of it putting too much errosion on the soil and banks near the delta.
 
Devils Lake

The Red River basin starts at Lake Traverse in South Dakota (on North America's lesser known continental divide) and flows north through Fargo and Winnipeg in to Lake Winnipeg. Devils Lake is located within the Red River Basin. All water from Devils Lake eventually drains in to the Red River.

Little known fact: The song "Red River Valley" wasn't talking about the Red River in TX/OK, it was talking about the one in ND/Manitoba
