So I've been looking for info at the web and it's a bit of a mess. From what I've understood, Z87 boards are not "typically" supported except enthusiast-class boards like the Asus Maximus Hero IV.

Is this correct or does no Z87 mobo work with Devil's Canyon? I got an MSI Z87-G45 motherboard. Would it work with the i7 of the Devil's Canyon?

Officially they won't but you might be lucky with a bios update.

As I heard no Haswell Refresh cpu (Devil's Canyon) will work with the z87 mobos. You will need the new Z97 mobos. I would say contact MSI as they would know better than anyone if your z87 mobo can be updated or not to make it compatible. Once the new CPUs get out into the hands of the consumer we will know more about what they can and cannot do until then its just speculation.

Devil's Canyon is NOT Haswell Refresh. Haswell Refresh requires just a BIOS upgrade (Maybe not even that), and is even supported by B85 based Motherboards, so I guess that it should work among all the launch Chipsets.

Nope. Devil's Canyon will not work on Z87 period.

Haswell refresh WILL work on Z87. Devil's Canyon WILL NOT work Z87. Without going into detail, these (Haswell refresh and Devil's canyon) are considered separate. Devil's Canyon and Broadwell both will use different power delivery mechanisms which are NOT present on Z87. Haswell refresh uses the same as existing Haswell parts.

JJ from Asus discussed this in detail in several Asus Z97 videos.

For Devil's Canyon or Broadwell you need Z97. However, Haswell refresh up to the locked 4790 *will work* on the Z87. Only Devil's Canyon and Broadwell are excluded. Personally, Haswell refresh seems rather worthless to me since they're all locked, so i'd stay with Haswell (if you have one) but if you are buying a new platform there is only one choice. You need Z97, and you get DC and Broadwell support along with it.
