My sister's house had Qwest internet until a week or so ago. She had been using a Actiontec dsl wireless PK5000 router. They switched to Cox internet and the tech installed a Motorola SBV5222 cable modem. With the new modem, they have lost the ability to connect their devices wirelessly since there is no wireless router now. My brother in law decided to try hooking back up the old Qwest wireless router between the new Motorola modem and the computer. They still have an internet connection but he couldn't connect his phone, ps3 etc to the router.

They asked me to stop by to look at it. I'm a networking dummy and couldn't get her devices to connect either. When the Modem is connected with the router, I can't get into the routers menu. I can't figure out it's ip to access it. If I unplug the modem I can get into the router's menu. I did a little reading on the internet and it looked like I needed to change the setting in the router to transparent bridge. Devices now can connect to the router but they still don't have internet access with the modem plugged back in. Is there another setting that I need to enable to be able to connect?

Any ideas?

I'm I doing this the wrong way or do I just need a router with an in port? I thought it was possible to configure a dsl router to use one of it's ports as an in port. Anyone care to comment?

Their PK5000 is a DSL modem with inbuilt router/switch/AP and cannot be connected to the cable modem, as it is designed to connect directly to the phone line.

I think you can only use the PK5000 as a switch. I don't think the router portion will still function properly.

Ok. I'll just pick them up another router.

When I was looking online, I found this in another forum, but they have different devices. I don't see any similiar setting in my sisters router so I guess it wouldn't work. There is a broaband settings tab in the advanced menu with a bunch of other stuff, but I couldn't find any documentation in the online manual.

"Probably too late but I happened to stumble across your post while attempting to do the same thing. Couldn't find any sites about it, but after a bit of playing around, I figured out how. I had Verizon DSL, just switched today to Optimum Online Cable modem. Was using the same Westell 327W, optimum provided basic cable modem.
-Connect cat5 cable from ethernet port on cable modem to ethernet port 1 on westell. (Must be port 1)
-Connect cat5 cable from computer NIC to other port on westell.
-(You may need to) Start->Run->cmd
ipconfig -release all
ipconfig -renew
Here's the trick...
-Open web browser, go to westell homepage (likely 192.168.0.1)
-Configuration tab, Advanced WAN->WAN
-Change WAN PORT drop down from DSL ATM PORT to ETHERNET PORT 1
-Click Edit button. Change Protocol from PPPoE to ROUTED.
-Radio button for DHCP Client to Enable.
-Click Set button.
-(You may need to) Power cycle both Cable Modem and Westell device"

Combos Modem/Router can not be used as a stand alone Router since the WAN connection is inside from the Modem part to the Router part.

If you do have another Router on the connection, the Combo Wireless Router/modem can be use as an Access Point if configured this way.
